Lindisfarne is so comically well protected from land that its kind of funny the Vikings hit their first from the sea.

On this day in 793 the Vikings heroically saved the cultural heritage of Lindisfarne after the monks spontaneously and mysteriously died.

The historic accounts of the Vikings were written by Catholic monks. The accuracy of the Viking image as brutal invaders may be biased.
In the territory of present day Denmark we find lots of remnants of fortifications meant for defense during the Viking age. If Vikings were the aggressors, why would they need all those structures to defend their homeland.
I’m going to make a post about Conquistadors and see how it goes.
Edit: Cmon don’t downvote, it’s the same occupation 😉

The thing I find funny is that Viking states survived the norman invasion of England in the British isles. William just didn’t care about the Isle of Man

Lindisfarne wasn’t the first in England to be hit.
They hit Portland in Dorset slightly before – but because it wasnt a monastery it doesn’t carry the imagination the same way.
As a Dane I must say: Back in the days we DID move fast and broke things.

Ok… So… Like… Was this before or after the invention of the minigun?
When they started with all these raids, how did they handle the laser raptors?Â

Umm… should us Scandinavians take pride in the fact or feel bad about the raids?
I think it’s cool that they were able to reach everywhere with their ships, and I guess
the whole pagan thing of ulfhednar and berserkir, the elite warriors using tactics from
the animal kingdom.
This modern Hollywood nonsense needs to stop already, though.

Now the danes and other regions where the vikings lived will be forced to yield to any demands the British government makes of them in 2025… Isn’t that how the game works?

the Anglo Saxon Chronicle says 6 days before the ides of january. current wisdom suggests this is a transcription error and they meant june. if so that would be 13 – 6 which is the 7th of june in the julian calendar, which seems to be more like the 11th in the gregorian. see you back here on wednesday.

Still not as crazy as when [the Swedes went all the way to south Germany and Prague during the Thirty Years War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_intervention_in_the_Thirty_Years%27_War), or when they [conquered Poland all the way to Krakow.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deluge_(history)) They caused widespread destruction in the process.
