Where does this fine money go?

Really I think it should be used to put in summer school so the kids can catch up on any education they’ve missed.

If they really wanted to do something about fixing the issue the government would stop the travel industry exploiting holiday makers pricing during half term holidays, or allowing one holiday per year for families during school time.

Right now it’s cheaper to pay the local authority fine than it is to take a family holiday during the school holidays.

So the fines are just covering the cost of the department that issues them? And a tiny bit left over helps families fix the attendance issues, which is usually schools shit and my kid doesn’t wanna be here and the family wanted to go on holiday outside of peak cost? Sounds redundant

    4. When folks complain about ‘big government’ this is exactly the sort of shit they mean.

“It also highlighted that its 93% attendance rate was above the national average by 0.1%.”

A lot of councils DON’T issue fines, so reading this, the nominal effect is what, .5%? Whooptydoo.

Let parents decide, let kids decide and piss off with this sort of overbearing bullshit. No wonder parents think schools are responsible for the discipline of their kids.

It’s still cheaper than going on holiday in peak holiday time.

It would be cheaper to go on holiday during school term and pay the fine.

      Few things with this:

You could take a 5 day holiday in term time, be fined, and still end up with 95%+ attendance, good by any metric

You could also take a huge amount of time off school, perhaps because you do not value education, and attribute this to some spuriously defined SEND need. The LA is highly unlikely to pursue.

Kids taking time off throughout the school year is a problem for teachers, especially when the teacher standards hold you personally responsible for pupil progress.

      Here are some ideas…

      – government need to set a variability % rate on holidays inside and outside of term time, I.e., there cannot be a greater disparity than 30% (e.g. for your cheapest and most expensive rare for the same holiday/product).

      – greater consistency in the implantation of fines. Surprisingly there are still schools that do not enforce these consistently, this can be time intensive without dedicated staff (and the money doesn’t go back to schools), often requiring an SLA with the EWO

      – as others have said, 4 week summer with 2 weeks ‘floating holiday’. I like the idea that this is earned by attaining what would otherwise be effective attendance (e.g., at least 90% attendance), of course considerate of those with long term- illness.
