Doesn’t NATO describe the Baltic defense plans as the evacuation of the territory and subsequent de-occupation by military means? I could be wrong, but I remember that this was actively discussed some time ago.
Knowing the current Trump administration, they will say that war is bad and the oppressed Russian population should have their say, thereby allowing a fake referendum to be held
“Little Green Men” don’t need a NATO response and can perfectly well be dispatched by troops already in the region… It’s not like Estonia hasn’t been thinking of the possibility for the last 10 years.
That’s a problem with all this fearmongering: yes Russia could test defences with small scale incursions – and those might lead to political discussions about what response to take. But small scale incursions are also relatively easy defended by local troops who won’t have any qualms about striking back.
Large numbers of tanks rolling in are much more difficult to defend against, but also much more likely to motivate allies to respond.
People forget that we already gave the “little green men” in Transnistria. How do you think they do rotation? They can’t obviously travel through Ukraine, so they have “tourist visas” to reach russia back and forth.
There is no reason why Germany, UK, France and Italy shouldn’t be fielding half a million each as a standing army right now
