More people on my team have been placed on PIPs recently from what they say are arbitrary reasons. A PIP is a gentle push out the door

Have heard from two of my friends they are being brought back to office 5 days a week and the upper management are hoping a significant amount of people leave on their own

No.
In fact we are struggling to hire because there just aren’t enough engineers out there

Yep, more and more of my team got let go each month for “performance” reasons until it eventually happened to myself and the rest of my team. No prior warnings, and the tiniest of reasons given.
We were however generously given a nice lump sum if we promised not to take legal action, which was sooooo generous of them considering I was such a poor performer in their eyes

My wife works in finance at a mid sized firm and she has said that they aren’t replacing people that leave. There is basically an informal hiring freeze and people are shuffled around as needed. She and her colleagues are really starting to feel the extra work
