It needs to be done as soon as possible but could the state not provide funds. It’s critical infrastructure.

Part of the increase is the restoration of the reduction they were forced to make due to undercharging industry for years. I’d be happier swallowing this increase if I could be assured they were charging industry what they what they should be now.

As it is it’s €50 a bill they get, give or take from most of us. So not small change for most people.

      According to ESB website:

”We connected around 37,558 new customers (homes & businesses) in 2024, to make a total of roughly 2.5 million customers connected.”

Which means 2,500,000 customers times extra €83 per year, comes out to €207,500,000 yearly or about a Billion every 5 years

It’s a critical infrastructure. Essentially over the next decade nearly everything will be moving onto the grid and away from petrol. That will deliver massive long term gains as we should be much less dependent on imported fuels that can rocket in price as soon as something goes wrong in the world.

Get the data centres to pay for it. They use about a quarter of the energy in the country as it is.

How about you use the carbon tax we pay on everything instead of increasing electricity bills.

      > New data centres, which the Government wants to support in its drive to bring AI technologies to the country, would place enormous strain on the system.

      >ESB Networks was unable to say how much extra investment would be needed to cater for them or what the knock-on effect would be on customers.

This is a terrible indictment. There’s no plan if they don’t factor in the fastest increase in demand for power in recent years.

We’re obliged to cut CO2 emissions, but covering the country in data centres. We’re obliged to cut CO2 emissions, but not reducing cattle numbers or milk production.

If the government was running a weight loss clinic, they’d build a diet around Mars bars and pints of Bulmers — and then say, sure, you can still lose weight that way. And the thing is, you can, but only so long as you starve yourself the rest of the day.

      Something has to give.
