Buildings are designed as creches? They all seem to be creches designed as residential properties

      This is indeed a scandal.

I have 7 mo twins. My wife has taken one year of maternity leave, after which we need to find a creche. We can’t find a creche anywhere in the whole north-eastern quarter of Dublin. So we’re stuffed. As it stands, the only alternative is an unregistered childminder (i.e. no subsidies) for €20 an hour – that’s effectively one of our salaries.

There’s a huge lack of crèche capacity right now, and we’re relying on new build crèches in new developments to fill the gaps. If those crèches aren’t being used for what they have planning permission, then we’ve an even bigger problem

      > “I know myself of instances where there are facilities that were built, that were never used for the purpose for which they were built in terms of [a] childcare facility, and then eventually some of them became a change of use, and something else went in there that’s not acceptable.”

Maybe the problem isn’t that they change the use but rather that nobody wants to manage the crèche and the State is completely absent in this role of providing an essential public services.

I live in a new estate surrounded by other new estates.

There is like 5 or 6 “crèche” buildings either completely empty or with people living in them.

The building company makes them way too small and no crèche wants to open as it would not be profitable to run on such small scale and they never go anywhere.

Everyone in said estates are struggling to find crèche for their children

It shows the fucking stupidity of the planning authorities tbh.

Every new estate includes a building that is to be used as a creche. Sometimes there’s even a nice playground in front on a public green.

Those buildings are almost always (in my experience) deep into the estate.

They would never be convenient for anyone outside the estate. They would never be economically viable if dependent on just the kids from the estate. They are usually too small to be economically viable anyway.

Planners have no idea of the economics of childminding. They put in a requirement that would never work, and then are surprised when builders, in doing the minimum needed to comply, subvert their plans.

Childcare should not be a private enterprise. All of the problems with childcare in Ireland flow from the fact that it is a business instead of a public service. The early years are so important and we should provide for them in the same way as we do for the rest of childhood – through a public education system with decently paid and well trained staff.

Unfortunately I don’t have the qualifications to run a crèche but I’d happily invest one one.

    8. 2 houses (attached semi-detached) were designated as a crèche for planning permission in my old estate 10 years ago.
They were for sale as a shell of a building for €1.55m (same €775 price as the houses), most expensive units in estate selected.
Never purchased. 8 years later a change of use planning permission went in. Both sold as houses recently.

More or less what they do with student apartments, build at a lower quality and overcharge and when they don’t sell change to regular apartments
