An ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin has said that “a full-scale war” in the Middle East is possible following Israel’s air strikes on Iran.
Konstantin Kosachev, vice-speaker of Russia’s upper house of parliament, made clear that Russia would stand by its ally, Iran.
“Israel’s actions cannot be justified from a legal, political, military or moral point of view. The only hope, albeit illusory, of avoiding a full-scale war is a consolidated condemnation of this operation by the international community,” he said, according to Russia’s official TASS news agency.

russia didn’t intervene in Syria right before the fall of Assad*, they won’t for Iran.
They can only bark statements for a couple of days, that’s it, since they don’t have any agreement with Iran of mutual intervention in case of attack.

Russia is buying drones from Iran.
Russia will not be amused that its drone supply will be curtailed, but I really doubt Russia is willing or able to protect Iran. Russia supported Syria too and just got their forces out of there.
Why is it that the only mentions about this escalation in /r/europe are a couple of articles with Russia’s reaction ?

They don’t have enough troops or equipment to do that, but I would totally encourage them to over-stretch their abilities and see what happens to their occupied territories in Europe.
In October 2024, Russia told Israel to not even consider attacking Iranian nuclear facilities.
In April 2024, after the killing of Hamas chief in Tehran, and day before Iranian missile retaliation against Israeli airbases, Russians tested ICBM in direction of Israel, indicating nuclear umbrella over Iran.
But in those days Trump was not in the White house to sell Ukraine, in exchange for free hand in Iran.
Today they “condemn and deeply regret”, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they again gave Israel codes to access Iranian Russian made AD systems.

That would certainly explain total collapse of Iranian air defence, and fact that now Israel has complete freedom of action over their airspace, even for slow flying surveillance drones.
