“Feet flat against the ground!” shouts the Ukrainian commander standing over them, kicking stray legs into position as he strides along the firing line and reloads his weapon. No mercy is spared for the female soldiers on his training ground, because he knows they can expect none from the Russians.
He looses more bullets into the ground in front of one riflewoman, but she stays locked on target.
Ukraine is readying for President Putin’s summer offensive, and these female volunteers are training for a renewed assault on Kyiv. They form the Witches of Bucha, a territorial defence unit comprised mostly from the female survivors of Russian occupation in March 2022
