As protesters marched through central Barcelona on Sunday, they shouted at the tourists who were filming them to “Go Home!”.
Bemused couples sitting in street cafés got squirted with water pistols and a luxury clothes store was pasted with stickers declaring the tourists who’d shut themselves inside unwelcome.
Tourism is hugely important to Spain and Barcelona is a top destination for visitors. But the crowds are growing so fast that many locals complain they’re being squeezed out of their own cities.
Here and in popular spots across southern Europe, residents are pushing back.

I mean, I get that they’re tired of overcrowding and such, but they also need to realize that local government and businesses rely on tourism money to keep the economy healthy. Perhaps limit the number of visitors through visa requirements?

Bro it was you that started all this. Holding olympics in BCN and working for it’s image as a tourist hotspot. Now face the consequences. Also i believe he who protests this should not be able to travel to any other city.

Tourism is both a blessing and a curse for Spain. On one hand, it brings a tremendous influx of foreign money and remains central to the country’s economy. On the other hand, the overwhelming dominance of tourism causes other economic sectors to struggle, as most jobs and expertise concentrate in this one area, creating a vicious cycle. Despite producing hundreds of thousands of engineers each year and boasting a highly rigorous education system, Spain still struggles to transition toward a more entrepreneurial and industrial economy.

I mean yeah tourists are annoying to locals. Always, everywhere, when there are more that few of them. Spanish tourists (football fans) just were in Poland couple of weeks ago, fighting, breaking chairs and glasses in bars in Wrocław city center for example. These people protesting are also annoying someone while travelling even if just by occupying extra space. Situation sucks, but these random tourists are not responsible for their frustration. They are probably just trying to have an enjoyable vacation, like most people do. Kinda shitty on locals’ end. Show attitude to city council, they are the ones that have real control over anything.

These comments are so entitled. Just because tourists have money and want to visit a place, and some people in that place are happy to take their money, doesn’t mean everyone else has to put up with it. People are allowed to push back on tourists ruining their hometown if the authorities aren’t doing enough to ensure things are sustainable. Should Barcelona just become the Venice of Spain and be basically a dead town except for tourists and operators?
I’d like to see the figures, but I reckon AirBnB is the killer issue. With so many homes being turned into short term accommodation you get a double whammy of locals being forced out by high prices/low supply, and many more tourists flooding in as there are more beds for them.

Solution: raise hotel prices and Airbnb so it gets unaffordable for most tourists. The irony is most tourists in Barcelona are Europeans who come during the summer, they could just enjoy their own countries

Support from Croatia. We’re sick of tourism.

Kind of a shame. I really love the city.
But even people in the tourism industry must realize that this is not only bad for inhabitants, but also destructive to what attracted people there in the first place. I don’t really see how people will continue to enjoy a crowded, hyper-commercialized place free of character. That’s what you get if you drive all of the locals out.
