Quindi ultimamente mi sono chiesto dei miei antenati e ho scavato questa vecchia carta dall’archivio del nonno di mia nonna e non sono stato in grado di tradurlo in alcun modo che abbia senso, qualcuno può aiutarmi con questo? È del 1917.

These are not travel papers. Here’s the translation:

at God’s mercy and by the People’s will,

      TSAR OF THE BULGARIANS

      by deigning to award

the sanitation soldier of the German Sanitary Mission in Bulgaria

      JOSEF BARTH

      with the Bronze Medal

      FOR MERIT

      of the military rank

we command for him to be given the present patent.

date and signature by the Chancellor of the Orders and his Secretary

This looks like a military merit award certificate from King Ferdinand of Bulgaria himself. The awardee is Josef Bart, if I managed to read it correctly.

Keep it, it has historical value. There should be a bronze medal with this as well. Did you manage to find it?

We, Ferdidand I, with God’s grace and the people’s will, Tsar of the Bulgarians, have decided to award the sanitary soldier of the German Sanitary Mission in Bulgaria, Josef Barth, with a bronze medal

I might’ve translated some words too literally, withour considering equivalents in English, but he was most likely was a medic in Bulgaria during WWI.

“Krankenwarter” literally means “orderly”. Militant orderlies were responsible for moving bodies, disposing of corpses, cleaning after amputations, the most common medical field procedure at the time, holding patients during said amputations and other hygenic tasks. Also it was their job to recover heavily wounded officers from the field along with soldiers of course. It’s probably safe to assume that this was the case with this reward as well.
