      Shameful.

Why do we have to spend hundreds of millions to house the rest of the world?

There’s hundreds of millions of people in the world who’d like to move here for a better life, what is the limit?

Absolutely bonkers, considering the fact that they will most likely outsource management of the facility to a third party company, (like Sodexo or G4S), at an additional cost of millions per year.

Need to ramp up border security and speed up removal of failed applicants as soon as possible.

And they made 50million from government payments? What an investment… hotelier turned direct provisionist… who knew you’d earn nearly a quarter of a billion

Insanity – there is literally no long-term thinking in government. Where do these people go permanently? Why are we spending millions on temporary accommodation when it’s long-term accommodation for the people already here, both Irish and foreign, that is needed?

We have a moral and legal obligation to do this, apparently…

      >Speaking at Government Buildings, Minister O’Callaghan said: “It really does represent value for money in terms of the amount of money we’re spending on the private commercial sector as opposed to the savings that can be achieved if we own our own accommodation.”

The hotel was sold for €30m in 2013 and is very likely in a much worse condition today, so please explain how a 500% increase in price iover 12 years represents good value for money?

The hotel is only profitable because of government contracts, so take those away and the value plummets.

I think the far right loonies are distracting from the actual issue.

We are spending hundreds of millions when the average worker can’t afford rent or buy a house.

For the love of God can the government turn this funding around and house the people paying the tax bill

With the way things are and the response you’d expect people to have to this, I wonder how long this hotel will be left standing for..

Just think of the actual multiple long-term benefits that could be invested in communities with that €148m.

Doesn’t even consider the fact this was a fucking NAMA hotel and sold for €30m.

Perhaps people should have a bit of knowledge about hotel sales before going bats.

This is €193,000 per bedroom. This is not thay much really.
The Grand Hotel in Malahode sold for €295k per key.

If they built a massive ipas at thornton hall as well as this purchase, then maybe we could move away from the madness of renting out hotels in small towns and villages around the country and return those back to their communities. I’d say there are people in citywest who won’t be too pleased with this development but it is logical to have the largest ipas centres in Dublin. I’d rather they were in ballsbridge or donnybrook, but that’s just not gonna happen sadly

Emer Higgins was towing the “nothing is agreed yet” party line last week to avoid answering questions

Our politicians are cowards only concerned with protecting their own parties

    13. golden_greenery on

The campus meaning the grounds around the hotel and not the actual Citywest Campus?

    14. IntentionFalse8822 on

Unless they plan to centralise offices and services out there and turn it into a sort of headquarters for all refugee services then that is an incredible price to pay for a rundown hotel.

Remember when people were giving out about outsourcing asylum seeker accommodation to the private sector? This is the natural conclusion of that.

This is a total waste of tax payers money. The whole IPAS scheme is a scam that literally brings zero benefit, just unqualified & uneducated middle aged men that need to be cared for and paid for by the taxpayer.. I just can’t comprehend the thinking here.

The funds could’ve been used for a million other things that need doing around the country that have been put on the back finger from new schools to infrastructure projects etc…
