Are abortion laws in need of an update? Probably.

But can anyone explain to me how it makes sense that it’s both illegal to have an abortion after 24 weeks but no criminal charges will be pressed if the law is broken.

“Women who terminate their pregnancy outside the rules, for example, after 24 weeks, will no longer be at risk of being investigated by police.”

So, there are no limits to when women can abort, but clinicians facilitating the abortion post 24 weeks will be breaking the law.

It does feel a bit extreme if someone theoretically decides to abort around the 40-week mark when the baby could otherwise be birthed healthy and be adopted if not maternally wanted.

Surely, the existing time limits stroke the right balance between honouring the rights of the mother & and baby’s interest.
