Explains our increased sales
It’s not limited to cigarettes though. Many people buy their groceries abroad as well due to significant price differences.
Well yeah, always an issue with these topics.
You’d hope that it at least deters some people who haven’t started smoking yet.
Europe: Let’s open borders and markets within EU.
Netherlands: Let’s increase prices for tobacco in a small country surrounded by European friends with cheaper tobacco.
Most politicians have below average intelligence, prove me wrong.
This is why the tax for using tobacco needs to be in the price of healthcare for smokers.
And it needs to be banned because the main reason why it’s so prevalent is because it’s so accessible.
You can also buy marijuana in Netherlands, but exporting it elsewhere is an offense.
The same goes for Czechia. Black market, cigarette trafficking….
The UK did the same and reduced smoking from 45% in the 1970’s to 11% today and suspect that number is still falling.
UK government: first time?
Nicely done – I remember when they did that in Germany, they only gradually increased taxes so fewer people would quit
I mean… yeah. raising tobacco taxes typically leads to that, not to less people smoking. It’s not the right approach to make people smoke less. For every drug if you want to avoid people using them is to teach people about the dangers and to forbid advertisements for them
We buy from Luxemburg. The same tobacco, Winston Blue costs 22 euros in NL and has only about 50 or 60 grams. While in Luxemburg the same tobacco of 100g costs just 12. The smugglers sell it at 15-20, yes with huge profit, but that’s still very cheaper than local one
A short lived attempt to tax cigarettes out of existence in Australia lasted about a week.
The profit margins on cigarettes are so huge that the tobacco companies could easily out maneuver the AUS government.
A packet of ciggies went from the price of a (!) HungryJacks meal to the price of a litre of liquor spirits. The various tobacco companies then just dropped their prices drastically. The government lost millions in projected revenue and attracted voter disapproval.
Australia did this… we now have a thriving black market. Raising taxes works but only to a degree, go too far, and people will start to look for alternatives or go without essentials.
Same here in norway. 3-4X prices. Like 16euro for one 20pack. I just go to sweden lol
