How is this allowed? Surely it is possible to link a slot to a person and ensure that if they cancel then the slot is reopened on the system.
FreakyGhostTown on
Just tie it to a driving licence. Turn up and the driving licence doesn’t match the booking, no test.
I know it’s “convenient” for instructors to be able to shuffle slots but this situation clearly calls for that convenience to be cut.

I passed in 2023 and it’s been a problem since then, the only way to get a test that wasn’t 6 months in advance was to use one of the many apps that pings for cancellations.

You could literally solve this with an excel spreadsheet…

Label it as fraud and and 3rd party sellers of driving test face a fine higher than the cost that they are selling the test with or without prison time attached.

Just force pensioners to retest, they’ll sort the system out in no time.

If there’s a shortage then the price should be raised.
1) This will help fund the increase in capacity.
2) It will help distribute capacity to those who need it most or can make the most use out of it. Instead resources are distributed to those with the most time to click refresh.
3) Kill the black market.
Basic economics.

Why do people buy from scalpers? Only reason people bot is because they know others will still buy from them. PS5 is a prime example

This is 100% true..I paid around £900 last year to have an agent secure a road test for my wife and I.

Link them and lock them to the driving license that books it problem solved
Dunno why this is taking years to fix

Answer is simple, no third-party booklings.
All bookings are linked to your provisional, you can cancel and rebook, but you cant change driver details.
DiligentCockroach700 on
There’s an easy way to fix this. Don’t allow third parties to resell the slots.

I assume making it a mandatory requirement to give your provisional license number as a condition of booking a test would largely solve this problem. Limit of 2 tests per licence number and this would drop the backlog right out while still giving users another shot if they don’t pass, with the option to book another before their original back-up has been held. Same can apply to full licence holders and retests / advanced tests.
Instructors can still book for their students, as they have their students’ details already.
What are the flaws with this approach? Is there a public register of names and licence numbers that could be exploited? I passed back in 2007, so I have no idea how things operate now!

Link test slot specifically to the license.
Can’t book practical until have theory passed.
Enhanced anti bot measures…
Done.

They need to temporarily remove the ability to transfer a test to someone else, until they figure out how to stop the bots.
If you can’t transfer the slot, you can’t sell it.
And for the people saying tie it to a licence, that is how it is currently done. You need your licence number and theory test certificate to book a test slot.
Nonny-Mouse100 on
Easy solution….
If people don’t buy the “reselling” at inflated prices, then the runners of the bots loose a massive amount of money. And it stops.
I’ve said for decades, if people don’t stop using ticket touts, resellers (now bots) and go to the official locations instead, we’ll end up being held ransom.
But ME ME ME takes precedence.

I’m not a learner, nor have any special interest in this matter… However, this has been the case for years. Literally years. Why does it take the media to report on this situation for literally years before something is done? That says to me that it’s like this by design…
I thought the same with the Post Office scandal, the boats, the water companies. We get the same news cycle every year, and nothing is ever done about it?

This is so easy to fix. Link the application to the DVLA licensing and match to a provisional license number. If the applicant has a booking already, they have to release it.
DVLA has created a market in lience test applications, and should be hauled before CMA for this.

Easy peasy, just link a test to an ID or provisional license.
Keep track of the payment method and only allow one slot per method.
Only one slot per ID/License, too.
Make it super clear that refunds or changing the time/date are risky.
If they find bots/scalpers, keep their money and resell the slot.
I don’t get it; why can’t we do this simple stuff in 2025?
Low-Sign-6185 on
Took and passed my test back in February, had to reserve my slot 6 months in advance, and presumably wait another 6 months to try again if I failed. Thank God I passed 1st time, but the pressure on the day was immense. They’ve really got to sort this out, because more people are trying to book tests well before they’re ready just to get an allocation, which means more likely to re-take and just exacerbate the current issue.

Lots of people giving the same ‘easy’ answers. All of which have a way around them. I am and adi and have seen the problem for years. I also used to be an IT tech for 15 years. So 2 things as i see it have to happen.
Firstly, reduce how far into the future you can book a test from whatever it is right now(5-6 months) to 6 weeks. This will reduce the demand as everyone will have a fresh crack at 6 weeks away, this also reduces the want of buying a test because 6 weeks isn’t that far away making the hundreds of pounds the scalpers charge seem unreasonable.
They only way to fairly do this is to scale it back bit by bit other wise you will simply have no ability to book at all for 4 months wile it pulls back.
Secondly, A temporary ban on swapping tests(possibly permanent) if you cant swap test you disable the ability for the scalpers to work. Banning the cancellation bots is only hurting normal users it does not effect the operation of the scalpers.
None of the other solutions guarantee a solution and have very easy workarounds.
The DVSA have gotten themselves into a terrible mess with this and they need to hold their hands up and admit they allowed it. Bad/greedy people are always going to do bad greedy things you need to be proactive in stopping malware/malicious activities and they haven’t been.
If the current administration at the DVSA does not have strength to act, then we need new administration. This kind of screw up would not stand in the private sector, i have no idea why its stands in the public sector.
