First it should be mandatory to wear and use 24/7 bodycams for every public “servant”. No footage = jail.

Funny enough that same reasons (plus fighting piracy) were declared by Russian authorities back when first internet censorship laws were introduced. I hope guys you will like to live im authoritarian state.

The EU is half genius and half regarded.

They’re able to submit some really good customer protections laws, but on the other hand they keep coming back with their brain dead surveillance law.

As a Belgian, it honestly doesn’t surprise me. I often feel lucky that we speak Flemish because most foreigners don’t understand the ridiculous things that sometimes happen in our governments. Flanders is like stupid Hungary but at the north sea.

But each side (French and Flemish) has its own wild stories. I think we might be the only liberals whose party leader (of the French MR) went to the local elections campaigning for camera controls to monitor behavior on the streets – and even wanted to turn parts of his city into no-go zones specifically for people from France. The gambling industry is barely touched because a French-speaking chairman owns a football club, and cracking down would jeopardize his sponsorship money. Pure self-interest in the open and nobody (you can compare the press with Fox news but we have multiple of them)

And our current defense minister was once caught dead drunk, peeing in flowerbeds in Brussels – and we all know he’s no stranger to cheating on his partner. Every now and then, clips surface of him getting a bit too close with women. We must be Russia’s favorites because they don’t even need to produce kompromat – we’ve got politicians doing that for them.

And now they’re pushing hard to add backdoors in communication systems, while at the same time refusing to create an asset register in the fight against tax fraud – to protect their wealthy friends. Those double standards are honestly kind of hilarious. For example, people renting social housing face way more checks than the super-rich.

When it comes to corruption, Europe has been demanding a gift register for politicians and political parties for years… but progress has been slow because of so-called privacy concerns.

Honestly, John Oliver could easily do an entire series just about Belgium – there’s so much material with all the political quirks, scandals, and crazy contradictions.
