People need to realise that it doesn’t matter if you are there legally or not. It doesn’t matter if you are doing things the right way. It doesn’t even matter if you are a citizen. They are detaining people regardless.
Armed and masked men with no identification or warrants are grabbing people off the street and detaining them in private prisons where they are being used for slave labour. That is what is happening in the USA right now.
ICE is a threat to every immigrant in the US, to every non-white person in the US, and to every white hispanic person. Do not come to the states, it’s dangerous.
We can hope that things change – that the rule of law reasserts itself and we restore sanity long enough to create new checks and balances that actually prevent bad actors from fucking up the country, but until we do the US is not safe.
So what’s happening here is that as an immigrant you’re legally expected to carry your proof of residency in the US. No one does but I guess this is the technicality they nabbed him on. He will be fine but it’s an indicator that things are getting really intense for anyone with an immigrant status (me).
The US has become a complete fuckin shithole, zero interest in ever living there or visiting as a tourist. Giving Trump 2 terms (possibly more) is up there with Brexit for one country hellbent on ruining itself for decades
