So instead of addressing the underlying issue we should just stop reporting on it?

How patronising to put all the responsibility on people consuming media headlines.

If only people didn’t know about an ever growing number of illegal immigrants we wouldn’t have an issue and we could all relax in our liberal paradise of cheap deliveroos!

Reform are obviously capitalism very well on the issue and will increasingly gain political power over it…, if we want to avoid those morons getting that power we can’t just ignore the issue and pretend people are wrong to be concerned!

Would Brown have won if he hadn’t called the told bigot a bigot?

    4. Most people aren’t particularly politically conscious. Most people don’t pay all that much attention to politics.

So it’s not particularly surprising that when our newspapers begin systemically pumping out stories about a particular issue, and when our political class begin systemically pumping out soundbytes about a particular issue, that people will start to echo those arguments and insist that this issue is important and *something needs to be done about it*.

Our billionaire-owned press and billionaire-owned political parties would rather we get angry at today’s scapegoat than get angry about the real causes of economic decline in Britain.

      > The University of Warwick paper notes previous studies showing that public perceptions of immigration levels are often exaggerated and “only weakly correlated” with actual migration statistics. “These misperceptions are shaped more by media framing, political discourse, and symbolic cues than by local migration levels or hard facts,” they write.

That’s the most important part really. Most people aren’t responding to *actual* experiences. They’re responding to what newspapers and social media spaces *tell* them to think.

They’ve intentionally neglected the exponential rise in legal migration over the past decade.

Perhaps instead of patronising voters or reducing them to simplistic left-versus-right labels, we should take the time to listen, understand their perspectives, and respond to their genuine concerns with empathy and respect.

The country has shown a clear desire to reduce mass immigration, so let’s deal with the problem constructively.

      I love the framing.

Its not “Bad thing happens” its “Bad people notice thing happening”. Or worse yet “Bad thing being seized on by bad people as an issue and using that for political power”.

Its like the Norm Macdonald joke: “Imagine if isis got a nuclear weapon and used it to murder tens of millions of people. The islamophobia that would result would be horrific”

How many migrants are there in the UK as a % of the total population? No one knows. No one knows what the population of the UK is or where they all are. If any government was serious about the subject they would insist on ID cards and registration of everyone where they lived.

I’m not entirely convinced that if the media reported the small boat crisis differently we would be welcoming them with open arms. I expect the rise in concern about immigration has a lot to do with the rise in immigration too. Media bias no doubt has some effect but I think lot of people overplay it.

Hate and negativity sells. The media and right wing influencer online know this you get all the right wing attack / posting negative comments and then the left people defending a situation . But it’s proven that most people believe what they read even if the source points a retraction

    10. Weird-Statistician on

You can’t really have positive headlines about small boat crossings

Oh look, another thread of people here not reading the article and just being angry at a headline.
