The dangerous 32C heat that will be endured by people in the south-east of England on Saturday will have been made 100 times more likely by the climate crisis, scientists have calculated.
Global heating, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, is making every heatwave more likely and more intense. The 32C (89.6F) day forecast on Saturday would have been expected only once every 2,500 years without the climate crisis, the researchers said, and June heatwaves are now about 2-4C (3.6-7.2F) hotter than in the past.
The heat is expected to cause premature deaths, particularly among older and vulnerable people. More than 10,000 people died before their time in summer heatwaves between 2020 and 2024, according to the UK Health Security Agency, and the UK government has been heavily criticised for failing to properly prepare people for extreme weather.

Oh no it’s going to be pleasant and balmy more often! Global warming will lead to serious Pimm’s shortages and climate migrants to the beer garden from the bar

Why didn’t scientists warn us that adding billions of tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere would have consequences!!

It isn’t deadly. People just can’t afford proper air conditioning. People in the Middle East endure 50*C + for months and months because of air conditioning. I dont care if people think air condition is unnecessary, Brits should be able to afford a comfortable home.

Everybody is struggling while I’m thriving in the heat and the sun 😭
EDIT: Damn, why are people downvoting me just for saying I’m liking the heat? lol

Yeah it’s fucked.
Living in a dormer, bedrooms are all 30+ even with windows open and fans on.
Looking at getting an aircon system installed because it’s making bedtime a nightmare for the kids.

You know it’s Real Science because it’s such an exact number, 100. And it’s so testable.
I’m not sure how we survived the horrors of high-20 c days in the past. Thanks Guardian. I’ll be sure to wait inside, crying about it all.

And yet you still get idiots saying stuff like “It’s summer, of course it’s warm” as if this weather is normal.

Maybe it’s about time the government encourage every new house to have AC like most of the rest of the world?

It’s the second iteration of man vs nature. The environment forced us to evolve and create technology, which evolved the environment to become more dangerous to us, and now we don’t really have the right to complain as a species if this new survival gradient does kill us in large numbers.
It’s almost enough to prod my atheist mind into considering intelligent design, given it was accumulation of resources that led us here, and now the sun is killing the old people hoarding said resources within the homes bought with them, and predominantly in the richer southern parts of the country.
Getting killed by the sun is at least a worthy way to die though. I’ve not really approved of anything we’ve done as a country since I’ve been alive so far, and so on aggregate consider these sorts of indiscriminate disasters to be an opportunity. Covid broke land values in city centres and gave us working from home by making it obvious what our best interests were even when there was profit to be made from the contrary. I don’t think we achieved significant demographic change but we were *so close.* A good heatwave that shocks people with the death-toll, especially if a kid dies without other complications for it, may well change environmental policy or prevent the inevitable reform government coming from trashing existing ones.
TLDR: Any change is good change in the Land of Slightly Tedious Evil.

Nearly every stupid and damaging decision made in the UK and the US in the last 30 years can trace its roots directly back to Murdoch. That scroat has done more damage to the planet and humanity than any man alive today. Some people are just a curse.

Going by this subs usual reaction to these kind of headlines you’d think that there’s absolutely zero point at all taking any action to prevent climate breakdown as the US and China produce so much more CO2 than we do, basically arguing in favour of human extinction just so that we can have lower energy prices

The UK produces less than 1% of global emissions and our emissions have been declining sharply for decades.
Climate change is a serious problem, but it isn’t *our* problem to solve alone. We must do three things:
1. Take immediate steps to care for our population, including plans to adapt the housing stock (air con, shade awnings, new window styles, etc.)
2. Take immediate steps to shore up our infrastructure in the face of larger temperature swings (roads, grid, etc.)
3. Push hard for intentional solutions, especially by getting the largest countries to curb the rate of their high emission activities.

It isnt just the climate crisis that makes it worse, its everything else as well.
constantly managed and worked land continues to reduce tree cover and soil quality and thus not likely to retain any moisture in the ground. Along with our towns and cities are concrete jungles so that creates a heat island effect. Trees in streets and roads would reduces ambient temperatures by a few degrees, and the moment it gets a little sunny people for some reason love to drive around a lot which increases the pollution and also increases the effects of the heat island because the constant rumblings of cars driving by makes the outside feel like an oven when you’re near a busy road.
Im not an at risk person but im already fed up with it, indoors is hotter than the outside and I have tried everything to reduce the temps indoors and nothing is really working because of how our buildings are made along with everything else. So most of the time I am naked and laying on the hardwood floor when im home.
