I think the goal for most people is not about reducing net migration it is about having no migration. Then we can seriously have a conversation about benefits, until then, good luck denying someone who doesn’t speak the language a right to benefits…

So the reason migrants dont stop in France (or an other EU nation) is because you need to have documentation to work there and dont here. I would advise starting there.
It would stop it overnight.

I imagine every government will *say* they want to reduce migration but when in power they won’t actually *do* it.
Remind me, Rory Stewart, did the Tories promise to stop the illegal migration? Yes. Did they do it? No. Labour also promised in their manifesto to stop the boats. Did they do it? No.
UK is an island for crying out loud and we last got invaded in 1066. It really should not be difficult to stop the boats from crossing.

They’ll always be a handy scapegoat for any government. Waaaah it’s not our fault the county sucks its these guys, honest guv, trust us now go shout at them while we see what’s left down the back of the couch.

Which legal immigrates will be reduced – since that’s 95%+ of the immigrants coming into the uk ??

>Firstly, there are no women and children on these boats.
Firstly, that’s not true. Yes, it is majority over-18 males, around 75%. That still leaves 25% of people being women and children.
>It’s not kind to help people make a perilous journey.
Don’t act like you care for one minute about the welfare of these people. I’ve just seen you in another comment advocating for the sinking of these boats. It’s just a bad faith argument.

It’s going to take Westminster 10 years and hundreds of focus groups to understand the above. It’s time to send the boys home.

It sounds good to voters as it’s one of the most hot topics that the electorate has concerns about- Mainly due to it being thrusted in our faces by every news outlet/tabloid/talk show etc.
What does the reality of reducing migration actually look like? Rather bleak to be honest.
Many of our universities depend on international students to stay afloat due to the real terms cuts of government grants since 2010 onwards. Most of the figures we see from migration come from international students, who are a huge contribution to not only the universities but the cities they’re based in. Cities like Southampton now have a high proportion of the population be students, so a lot of businesses depend on them for their custom.
The night time economy is mostly foreign workers. Taxis, takeaways, deliveries, petrol stations etc are not jobs most people find desirable so vacancies would increase and a lot of the mentioned would have to reduce hours, taking away the conveniences we’ve become accustomed to.
Health and social care. Usually the go to thing to highlight but for a good reason. In 2021, the care sector was facing a recruitment crisis – waiting lists spiralled to unmanageable levels, homes had to close beds, packages of care were being rejected, and standards in care reached an all time low. The visa scheme sorted a lot of these issues out very quickly. Then the NHS has a huge proportion of foreign workers, which is a tradition dating back to the Wind rush generation at the establishment of the NHS.
We have an aging population, a declining birth rate. Stopping immigration will have severe impacts on the economy, education and many of our own well-being.
The people crying about immigrations today will find something else to amplify tomorrow. The best thing we can do is just let them scream into the wind and not listen to them. Think about the consequences of what we our desires.

None of them have been trying to do so for the last 40 years.

William the Conqueror brought about 50,000 troops to England. That’s about a fortnight of immigration last year.
