    1. Remind me – how long has been Orby at helm? Decade? Decade and half?

    2. AideSpartak on

Thank you, mister Orban! Now we finally aren’t last in every EU statistic

    3. klemonth on

And they say how left can’t do economy… look at this right wing man

    4. Spicy-hot_Ramen on

Sheesh, that’s why Orban doesn’t want us in the EU. We would take his #1 spot

    5. TheGoalkeeper on

Poorest and most fascist! Hope Hungarians stand up at the next election (and afterwards). I believe in them.

    6. Equivalent-Role4632 on

Well that’s what fascist do. They rob their countries blind. Putin is the worlds richest man and everyone else are dirt poor. Same in China. Same in all fascist countries. They are just thieves.

    7. dcroopev on

Now that we are not first we have to find a new purpose in life. It feels like Wile E. Coyote finally catching the Roadrunner.

    8. VennDiagrammed1 on

Vote Fidesz for 15 years and that’s what you get! No sympathy!

I’ve never heard from so many happy Bulgarians at once! Keep it down y’all! 😜

    10. redshirt6666 on

and orbƔn and his family is the richest among the leaders in europe.

    11. saurfang_fan on

EU in the end is supposed to be an economic trade union, and it’s not built to be more than that, even though many act as if it was more. As long as Hungarians can vote democratically, what they vote is their own responsibility as a nation.

    12. untruth-social-6666 on

Not sure the EU can get involved with a ā€œviolation of valuesā€ if they can then europe has an identity issue

    13. LethalOkra on

I am curious. What can the EU really do in such a scenario? I mean other than impose fines and cutting of funding. Such a case is unprecedented and it would be the first time to see the EU adapt and step up by actually doing something to impose certain values on its members.

    14. Buriedpickle on

While this is a hilarious slight against OrbĆ”n’s propaganda, it’s not really true.

The index cited in the article is the AIC data in [this ](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/en/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20250618-1)article.

Now, AIC isn’t really a measure of how poor a nation is. It’s a measure of consumption. While it has some relation to wealth, it’s influenced by quite a lot of other factors, some examples:

      * consumption tendencies of the population (not huge differences within Europe)
      * debt usage – is the common person willing to back consumption with debt?
      * economic, financial security – does the common person feel safe, or would they rather save their money for a forseeable rainy day?
      * sudden inflation – does the common person feel like everything has gotten much more expensive, and do they radically decrease their consumption as a reaction?

If a population is poorer, but is willing to use debt to back their spending, and isn’t scared of the economic future, the country’s AIC will go up. If a country is well off, but the population wants to keep larger emergency fund volumes, then the AIC will decrease.

Of course, AIC is still an important statistic. It shows the vigour of domestic economies – if no-one buys products and services, revenues will decrease regardless of how wealthy a country is. That’s a really bad sign.

But it shouldn’t be used to determine how poor a country is. If we followed this logic, then Poland, Czechia, and Slovenia – quite well-off countries in CEE – would be poorer than Romania.

      ___

*Edit: please, always look up indices when seeing data like this. Misrepresenting and misinterpreting statistics is all too common. These aren’t points of data that should be used without understanding.*

*This is especially common when considering deeply flawed indices like HDI. (If you want to use something like HDI, at least use inequality adjusted HDI)*

    15. I can only encourage the Hungarians to get rid of their Russian pawn leader. There’s very little the EU can do against a democratically elected leader

    16. justhereforpokemons on

His oligarchs are definitely not the poorest, anymore…

    17. Mercy--Main on

why haven’t we kicked them out yet? is italy blocking now instead of poland?

    18. Meanwhile Orban’s bank accounts gets fatter and fatter thanks to Vlad donations…

    19. I know the Individual Consumption thing is just some half made-up statistic that doesn’t really mean that Hungary is now somehow worse/poorer than Bulgaria but I’m getting so much Schadenfreude now. Finally, enough with this ‘EU’s poorest member’ thing that’s always been mentioned in any article about Bulgaria for decades now. It’s someone else’s turn for a change.

    20. Long_Hovercraft_3975 on

So…hungarians do not dare to contest the Orban by themselves but call for EU to do the job. Just great.

    21. It really takes a lot of corruption and oppression of workers rights to keep a country that received such a high amount of investment by foreign companies that poor.

Hungary is like a third-tier oil state without oil.

    22. ProfessionWeird6468 on

Sorry but UE dont help Orban will again put money to own pocketĀ

    24. bansheesho on

Hmm, so is there a correlation to conservative/authoritarian politics and poor results for the economy and it’s people? I wonder if there was some way of easily tracking this?

    25. Impressive_Study9438 on

As someone from the balkans I’ve got to ask you, was that label necessary and nice?

    27. CertainNet9823 on

There should be an EU Mechanism to intervene in countries that do not adhere to the values of the block. It should be possible for citizens at least to hold a referendum direct with the EU to make certain sanctions or restrictions on their own government
