      > Thousands of UK government laptops, phones and tablets have been lost or stolen

How many of them belonged to Louise Haigh?

Not sure why they say it seems high… 2 thousand devices lost/stolen but among 525k civil servants – if you assume the average theft has taken the laptop and the phone it’s even less from an incident perspective.

We obviously have to stop giving idiots electronic devices. I suppose these things get treated like public money does generally.

Well of course they have. It would be pretty fucking incredible if they hadn’t.

What a pointless story. Laptops get stolen all the time, there’s no magic shield for government property.

Civil servants are just the same as everyone else

What’s strange about stories like this is that people who work for the government are often held to different standards than those in the private sector. It’s as if working in government means you need to be more careful and make fewer mistakes.

Some people are naturally a bit more careless with work property than with their own—this happens in both the public and private sectors. At my workplace, about three times a year someone loses their phone or laptop, or it gets stolen.

I’ve not lost my work laptop or had it stolen, but I do have to cart it between my home and my office 5 days a week because I work in office full time. I’d be much less likely to lose it or have it stolen if I could have a computer terminal at the desk I use every day and not have a laptop, but apparently that costs too much.

If they’re not brand new, there’ll be someone who sends them abroad as ‘charity’. Seen it myself, thousands and thousands of pounds worth of good equipment thrown away or donated abroad.

I work at a small tech company. There are about 80 of us. Very few company phones or tablets, just laptops.

The loss/theft/destruction is about 2 per year. Being laptops people tend not to lose them. We get about 1 destroyed (drink spilled on it, kid throws out of window etc) and 1 stolen.

I’d assume the theft rate on mobiles is much higher
