The entrance to the building has completely collapsed. Rescue teams are searching for people trapped beneath the rubble. Nearby buildings were also damaged by the blast wave. Some survivors stand outside wrapped in blankets, others with bandages. One resident, Tetyana, said her apartment was destroyed and that she survived by sheer luck.
“We had just returned to our apartments because the air raid was over. But right after that, another alert was issued – and then the missile hit. Some people managed to get downstairs, others didn’t. I barely made it down. A second later, the whole entrance collapsed,” Tetyana said.
Rescue dogs were deployed to search. Instructor and rescuer Viktoriia Denysenko explained:
“Our dogs are used for scouting. They help determine where people aren’t trapped, so that heavy equipment can be used safely. They also detect where survivors might be, using the scent of human breath — they bark to signal. Dogs searching for deceased victims respond to the scent of blood.”
She added that some people place pet food in their clothing, hoping dogs will find them, but this method isn’t reliable. A whistle is more effective.
“We don’t train dogs to search for food. But carrying a whistle is good idea — when someone’s trapped under debris, it’s hard to shout. A whistle can help rescuers locate them,” she said.
The search and rescue operation is ongoing, and casualty numbers continue to be updated.
State Emergency Service spokesperson Svitlana Vodolaha stressed that numbers may not be final:
“We haven’t completed debris removal, and we still don’t have final information on how many people were inside the building at the time of the strike. As of now, we know of nine confirmed deaths, including one 11-year-old child.”
Note that. A whistle to attract rescuers. To have with you when you sleep. To give to your loved ones. Don’t get distracted, support the defense of Ukraine.

Putin is going to start focusing all his remaining weaponry on Kyiv, I’m afraid. Ukraine’s ballistic missiles couldn’t come sooner.
