I suggest transforming into Irelands largest Dr Quirkeys Emporium

Vape shop, phone shop, nail salon and a dodgy pakistani chipper. Perfect.

Does this mean we’re going to see the proclamation of independence read outside a Zara every Easter Monday now?

I always felt we needed more shops and offices in Dublin City

Meh, it’s a post office now, how is this a big difference?

I’m no fan of the idea that historical sites in the city (and pretty much every site is some way historic) should be preserved in aspic and just looked at.

The city is for living in, there’s a way to recognise the history and use the building.

This sub is basically just the Journal comment section now isn’t it? Populated by people who fault everything with no information and others who think they’re only fucking hilarious.shame, it used to be interesting.

A major missed opportunity when taking into account Moore St

We’re not very good at honouring our patriots. Imo, the GPO should continue to function as a post office with a much expanded museum detailing the role of the building during 1916 and in Irish society post partition. Similar with Moore St, a beautiful museum could be developed detailing the role the street played in 1916 and since.

Come unification/independence, the GPO museum could be adapted to a National History Museum.

Should be turned into an international Rat Fair exhibition centre. All the best countries in the world will bring all the best rats in the world to be exhibited, with much pride and flair. Ireland will be the envy of all rat exhibitors and rat enthusiasts.

Beautiful building with a lot of historical pride attached,

Can’t say I’d be a fan of shops or offices

Gallery, Museum, Theater, to celebrate the founding of the state..

*They want to clean up and sort out O’Connell St first though*

Wow a historical marvel and site to be turned into a shopping mall, this really shows how morally bankrupt our leaders and society are. Groan

Poor idea. Nothing wrong with it as it is or as a museum.

I’d like to see better planning for O’Connell St in general. Smarter signage a long time wish.

Like there aren’t already enough vacant shop units in the city, we need another shopping centre that desperately do we? People can’t afford food but need more retail space?

Fantastic I hope it turns into a great and vibrant cultural space like… Jervis and the ILAC…

I wouldn’t be surprised if this decision was made to try and pawn off some of the maintenance costs.

What about the empty land beside the casino further up or all the other vacant buildings, why the one that’s actually used ????? There is so many abandoned sites but someone in DCC wants a shiny GPO project under their belt !!!!!

    20. TheIrishHawk on

The GPO is actually huge, far, far bigger than it looks on the outside. There’s a tonne of empty space in it that used to be used for offices before operations moved to the Exo building. I always thought it should have been a museum dedicated to the Rising (and not just the Witness History part in the basement) and become a part of some sort of cultural quarter with Moore Street and Parnell Street and O’Connell Street all being revamped.

But I suppose a big Supermacs is fine too

    21. Tracist_Enf on

So they have the money turn the GPO into a shopping center over 10 years but no money to build houses…
