It would be a bit dodgy if we said no, wouldn’t it, considering we permanently hold the deputy allied commander role.
> Under NATO’s new estimate, the UK expects to reach at least 4.1% of GDP in 2027. All Allies will review the trajectory and the balance of spend between defence and wider national resilience in 2029, when NATO next reviews its capability plans.
Our defence spending this year is 2.3% of GDP. If all we’re going to do to reach a higher percentage is fiddle with the definition of ‘defence’ to include ‘security and resilience’ then I’m not sure that’s going to help us or any of the other member states in the long run to rearm.
There are a lot of ways for this investment to boost GDP – so hopefully this has a properly thought-through plan behind it (or at least ahead of it).
Starmer is a big fan of mission-based economics and the mission-driven government (worth listening to the Maria Mazzucato TED talk about it) and this along with sustainability align well to its principles.
Security for the working people? Please stop, I’m about to burst into tears.
Oh look, they’re using Reform speak.
As long as Israel doesn’t control what the Nato money is spent on by calling wolf
Working people in UK need security from Russia most of all.
That’s good considering that Russia regularly threatens the UK and has assassinated people in the UK.
