    1. Good news, many underestimate the kind of work that goes into building a nuclear submarine. Every single one is its own mega project, and we could be looking to build up to 16 ( 4 SSBN and 12 SSN ) in the next 20-30 years. Any help we can get from the Aussies in terms of industrial capacity and cost sharing is very welcome.

BAE are the gold standard for building subs, and they still struggled with Astute because they are so incomprehensibly complex, now imagine a next gen platform that is bigger, and you need to build almost 2x the amount and pump out one every 2 years.

Prob a good idea to reduce dependency on US, not increase it.

China is a significant threat now in the Pacific. For years they’ve been pouring money into various island nations and cementing their presence. It’s clear there are designs on controlling the Pacific.

The UK has ignored the Pacific for decades at this point, despite having had a lot of goodwill and strong ties there because of the Commonwealth. The Queen’s age/declining health and Charles’s, plus the UK’s poor treatment of Australian and NZ youngsters (they have been caught by the UK’s immigration crackdown) and farmers (abandoned when the UK moved closer to the EU and there’s still a lot of resentment) has meant that those ties are being severed.

The point is, it makes a lot of sense for all kinds of reasons to support building of the submarines in Australia. There would be a lot of goodwill if decent jobs became available in the Southern Hemisphere as a result of investment. Also, Australia is right there in the Pacific. It would not be practical to launch efforts from the US or UK and Australia should be prepared now, before the need arises.

    5. So… Next week Trump demands more or cancels AUKUS as its a bad deal?

I think it’s kinda impossible to deny for these big global deals of trade and defence contracts that Starmer and his Government have been pretty bloody good. Getting stuff over the line/recomitted because of the uncertainty of Trump.

It’s not much of a surprise that Starmers tactic on Trump is being copied by some EU nations including the ones that have also been the most aggressive in rebuking Trump. Both Macron and Merz have been firmer (because they have to be due to Trumps hatered of the EU) but also have engaged in stroking Trumps ego a bit.

I feel like most of the major European nations are all on the same page when dealing with him.

Sure, Trump will probably forget in a few hours because he’s a demented baboon’s arsehole, but it does seem that every time Starmer talks to him it manages to serve the UK’s interests. I’ve got to respect that.
