The US is pushing for big NATO spending to avoid a EU independent army.
They have no intention to keep their word on article 5.
When billions of EU money were provided for Covid recovery Spain was amongst thouse who screamed loudest for European solidarity.
But now that solidarity against Russian imperialism is needed, the Spanish leftists don’t like the concept of European solidarity that much anymore.
Tbh they’re the only ones who are right.. 5% is a ridiculous number
5% is madness, the objective is completely unrealistic for a lot of countries. Enjoy go to pension at 85 years old, say goodbye to public Healthcare and many other things if they really stick to this plan. And if you think this will be an European rearmement you are dumb as a brick, this is an European rearme ment with American weapons inside Nato scenario. There is no way the US wants to have an indipendent and strong Europe while denying their own military industry to favor the european one, this is one of the biggest trap I’ve ever seen in political history and our leaders seems to suck up to the idea. We need a De Gaulle in this time in history, but we only have spineless puppets.
Not even the US spends 5%. And NATO doesn’t even defend the canary islands.
Everyone just lighten up. The standard response should be *”Sure, okay, we’ll look into increasing our spending target to meet expectations”.*
As if 5% is even realistic for most countries. Just nod your head and move along. This is all just Trump noise. Governments and administrations will change, and everyone will have increased their spending target by some degree, and we’ll all be more secure. And in a few years, everyone will see that approximately 3.5% or whatever is a very reasonable average target.

Still haven’t heard a single media explain why 5% and what it means for NATO and all member states.
Moreover the opposite, I just heard it is a surrender or giving money to Trump.
It’s probably the most transformational summit of NATO since it was founded and spanish media only say what the government wants them to say to maintain the far left support Mr Sanchez needs.
Europe can easily overpower Russia with 2-3% of spending. The issue is that there is little to no joint procurement, economies of scale or unified military structures. If they can’t come together like that, unfortunately, will need to spend 5% to achieve similar results but more inefficiently.
I don’t know why people get mad at our government for not compromising to a goal that, let’s be honest, any country that doesn’t border Russia is never going to meet. And probably some that do neither.
Besides, historically it has been proven that if you want Spain to keep being a democracy, you need to tie the military in a very short leash.
I love the people complaining about this and trying to link it to the EU. Different organisations . . . DUH!

The EU has 1.5 million soldiers.
This 5% is something to make Trump happy and give him a win that he can present to his voters.
Requesting a raise in defense is reasonable, the 5% figure is bullshit, some countries will need more, and others will need less.
Why should we spend what Trump wants? Why 5%
Why would we buy stuff from the USA armament industry to boost American economy if the alliance doesn’t cover the whole of our territory?
At the end the orange guy it’s a fucking genius, Americans taunt Russia to a war with Ukraine, Ukraine sells its country resources to America without spilling even one drop of American blood, oh and forces to surrender to fucking putin the territory and resources they already got, nice splitting of a country.
Make Europeans stop buying gas from Rusia and divert those sweet funds to America, now the damm Americans are reselling Russian gas to us, to a higher prices!
Fund far right anti climate change agenda in Europe so we do not cover our energy need from our own natural resources and keep buying from America.

Why does Spain have to increase their defense spending? They’re the furthest away from any credible threat. Literally makes no sense to expect them to willingly make their citizens suffer, just for a couple of Eastern European countries to feel safer.
The problem is noone is explaining why 5 percent and how much better is 5 percent than current expenditure. If your output increases only by 20 percent but your defense budget is double then is it worth it?
Spain asked to meet the actual goals not a fixed expense, if anything it’s more pragmatic and conservative than anyone else.
I guess other countries are embarrassed that someone else was better at negotiating the terms. Spain already negotiated their gas prices during the price crisis at the start of the Ukraine invasion.
Spain doesn’t border with Russia so doesn’t care for 5%.
Northern countries care and call Spain insensitive for not caring.
When illegal immigration flares up, though northern countries doesn’t care for south EU borders, and don’t want any immigration.
Bottom line no county cares for EU just for their own ass.

By my nationality you can tell how much I care about higher military spending but the fact that Spain is disagreeing with that doesn’t make them a fucking villain.

The push for 5 is an attempt to sell more American weapons.
Good on Spain. Loved the country when we visited last year and I’m glad to see it from Canada.
There is no obligation for any member to accept any spending target. It’s up to the country to decide whether its worth it to tax its citizens today more to do it or tax its citizens in the future with debt to pay for more military spending. Europe can easily beat a Russian invasion with 2.00% spending with joint procurement and spending on production instead of US weapons

Spain the only EU country with balls.
So many hypocrites criticizing Spain, while many of their countries only joined NATO recently, while Spain has been a full member since 1982, and spending to keep those hypocrites safe in case they needed.
Spain has a big spending to keep the airspace and sea safe from foreign enemies, many countries don’t spend a cent because they are in central Europe, don’t have a Navy and the security of the airspace is secured by neighboring countries.
In past years many countries spent less than Spain, countries with bigger responsibilities on enabling Russian dependency, and not only the usual scapegoat (Germany), profiting and now come act like if they have any moral high-ground.

Stop sucking the western/nato propaganda. Europe doesn’t need to scale the spending. It needs nukes. EEUU won’t allow us to have more countries with them because otherwise we would become independent.
So they enforce the 5% because we’re forced to buy weapons from them.

I do not see why NATO needs to spend 5% in an army.
Warfare has changed a lot with small arms and drones taking center stage. Defending is much cheaper than attacking and we have no need for tanks or offensive equipment.
In any case we have nukes so I do not see how NATO would fight a conventional war in any case.
Just a scheme for the american/israeli weapon manufacturers to rip us off. Building our own industry would be wiser than spending so much in buying equipment that we are not going to use and can be outdated so fast.
We need to have the capacity to go into production, not to actually have the weapons right now.
