Ten months ago, I made a post on [r/italygames](/r/italygames/) talking about the [Stop Destroying Videogames](https://citizens-initiative.europa.eu/initiatives/details/2024/000007_en) initiative, with the main goal to ensure that purchased video games are left in a playable state once support from the publisher is over. The signature collection started on 31 July 2024, with the objective of reaching 1,000,000 total signatures and the minimum threshold in 7 European countries by 31 July 2025. Once these targets are reached, the European Parliament would be obliged to debate it and offer a response. [Since the threshold of 7 countries has already been surpassed, now we “only” need to reach the 1,000,000 signatures quota.]
Started off quite promising, the signature collection stalled for many months. This was also caused by the acts of sabotage and misinformation carried out by Pirate Software (Jason Thor Hal), [who deceively criticised the initiative](https://www.gamegrin.com/articles/sorry-pirate-software-but-stop-killing-games-isnt-bad/). Things, however, could change quickly. In the last few hours, two prominent commentary youtubers, [penguinz0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sJpTCitKqw) and [SomeOrdinaryGamer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmU5gcttf1c), have rekindled interest in the initiative. From around 460,000 signatures, it has risen to over 490,000 in less than a day. Maybe it’s not over yet!

Ross Scott (the youtuber, who started this campaign, creator of Freeman’s Mind, Civil Protection, and Ross’s Game Dungeon) made a [a final video update ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIfRLujXtUo)in which he addresses how things are not looking good, this being probably the last opportunity to change things, and if it fails, he will accept defeat.
But the main topic was how Thor’s active anti-campaign showed a sudden drop in support. For those who don’t know, Thor is another youtuber and game developer actively making an online only game, whose oppinion on the matter was it’s not a problem that games “die”, and either misunderstood the issue, or purposefully lied about the initiative, so his followers wouldn’t support it as well.
Ross tried to contact him about this, not to convince him, but to at least having a fair argument, which Thor turned down, because he doesn’t care, and Ross’s campaign is shit anyways (his words).
Interesting how wealth corresponds to videogame play time.
More time for leisure, while the other half cant even comprehend that some people have time left over for videogames

Commenting to say that thresholds no longer matter as we’ve hit the 7 countries required. We now need to hit the 1 million signature target from all EU. So it doesn’t matter if your country has hit its threshold goal, please sign the petition anyway if you haven’t already.

How does this petition always come back on reddit, when it’s feasibility is debunked every time it’s discussed and all lawmakers have rejected every time they had it under their eyes due to the fact it’s both impossible and a terrible idea.

Colder climates play more games?
One of the earliest signers here, unfortunately gaming is not as mainstream in my country yet and a lot of people aren’t even aware of these issues. Hope we get the 1mil. needed.
Genuine question: how can a place be supportive of any movement at above 100%? I’m trying to figure out the metric of the percentage here.
I really hate this exclude norway graphic, where denmark is really working in pleasing the swedes.
I’m not particularly affected by this initiative, but gave my sign because I know it means something to a lot of people, and would not hurt the community at all.

I can testify, Norway apparently doesn’t care about the initiative at all (I know it’s not on your map cause we’re not part of the union). Called the Norwegian Consumer Authority, they had no idea this initiative to preserve games in the EU even existed. Sad.
