Guess Portugal decided to turn up the Portu-gate on us.
Agree with direction, disagree with implementation.
Double time requirement without any “faster track” based on integration/contribution/merits is extremely populist move in desperate attempt to bite far right votes, classic. Office of simple solutions
Very stupid decision in my opinion. Instead of building housing and helping these people integrate (at least from Portuguese speaking countries), they take the easy populist route.
Portugal has way more potential than this.
Good move . Well done 🇵🇹
10 years is far too long.
Parliament hasn’t approved this yet and nobody knows if there will be changes. Lots of articles point this out even after a headline stating it has passed, but it’s shitty clickbait journalism. It probably will pass, but that doesn’t justify pretending it already has.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m for open borders but that’s just my personal opinion and I understand others are not.
As far as I can see, uncontrolled immigration is pushing the far right in Europe, and we don’t want that.
So, my personal opinion is that it’s good to slow down a bit. Tighten the rules for a little while. For what I can see is either less immigrants or far right.
Chega’s gains in Portugal were very much the result of the Manifestation of Interest program. You could show up legally or illegally, work under the table, pay a minimum tax contribution for a year, and, boom, get residency.
So guess what, people showed up en masse with souvenir shops becoming providers of illegal housing and fake employment. Earlier this year, the authorities identified thousands of cases where people used the same address to get public services. 2,500 people living at one spot.
And the result was that legitimate immigrants were harmed. Student visas, work visa holders all got screwed unable to get residency cards because the queue was overloaded with people. People who could do nothing more than latch onto a countrymen’s Uber Eats profile, use a fake address, use fake work papers from a souvenir shop and then claim residency and family reunification.
If you want the population to increase and create a tax base, great. Can you at least bring the best that these countries have to offer and not their dregs? There is a labor shortage of skilled people. No one needs more delivery guys.
Part of the reason to make citizenship possible only after 10 years is also to make passport hunters go elsewhere. If this dissuades 80% of them to go try Spain or Poland, that would make, right now, a lot of people happy (including those who decide to come). If that is good long term or not, we can not really judge, but passport hunting has led to issues for everybody, and the most harmed are often the immigrants themselves.

I can’t but notice that those trying the hardest to convince the portuguese people that this is bad for themselves are gringoes and rich expats.
Great. Now fix the broken system.
My partner completed her master’s degree here, has a full-time job, pays taxes like everyone else, and still can’t even get an appointment to renew her residency permit.
If you want to change the requirement from five to seven years, fine. But at the very least, make those seven years a fair and functional experience for people who are here legally and doing everything right.
Amazing ! they should abolish citizenship to foreigners at all. we don’t want our identity taken away. the can stay on visas like its done in UAE and Saudi, Qatar, etc.
Finally.
I checked the expat/immigrant subs and everyone seems pissed about this. And rightfully so, this change is ass.
Hopefully this will disarm the far right.
Finally.
