Nicotine as a substance is really not that bad for you. The quotes here that they are out to get nicotine are really quite strange as it’s pretty much fine other than it’s addictive. Caffeine is in the same boat.

What I mean by this is
Cigarettes 7 years of your life
Pouches some increase in mouth cancer but not nearly the same lifespan decrease. Sweden see them as a way to get people off much worse cigarettes

Vapes sometimes mixed with dodgy flavor chemicals. But I’ve seen no one claim standard vapes take a year or more off your life.

Nicotine patches as far as I’ve seen no observable decrease

*edit some references ‘Conclusions: Snus availability in Sweden appears to have contributed to the unusually low rates of smoking among Swedish men by helping them transfer to a notably less harmful form of nicotine dependence.’ from the journal of tabacco control https://tobaccocontrol.bmj.com/content/12/4/349

SNUS health effects wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_effects_of_snus the references tend to be more use here than the raw page.

Exclusive current snus users had an increased risk of all-cause mortality (aHR 1.28, 95% CI 1.20–1.35) https://academic.oup.com/ije/article/49/6/2041/6042990
This paper does not seem to take into account if the types people with worse (or better) health outcomes are the ones taking snus. Papers that do this for smoking find it much worse ‘After adjustment for imbalances in baseline characteristics, current smokers had a significantly higher risk of 10-year all-cause mortality than never smokers [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 2.29; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.60-3.27; P < 0.001], whereas former smokers did not.’ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33624046/

Because they enable *children* to get “very high doses of nicotine” apparently!

Is there any evidence of this? Or even problems with them, don’t most people just use them while giving up smoking?

Particularly invidious? That’s a bit strong no. Seems like the entire point of them is to be the cleanest and healthiest form of nicotine next to maybe the gums. Would he rather people just smoke the real stuff again? That’s the invidious action…

If you’re gonna have a problem with every better alternative then you ain’t gonna get anywhere.

      >The small pouches, which users put inside their lips to obtain a hit of nicotine, fall outside the parameters of Irish laws on tobacco or vapes.

Ah here, is this a repeat of that stupid situation where you can legally sell them to kids (even though most shops won’t)?

Okay. A friend of a friend went into hospital with chest pains, got told it was heart burn and sent home. Found dead on the kitchen floor when a simple mouth swab test may have saved his life.

So could we fix the health service so that doesn’t happen instead of whatever shit this is?

Seems a bit strongly worded and harsh for a product that seems to be quite innocuous or at least far more innocuous than cigarettes. Why don’t they use the same language about cigarettes? Why are we talking about banning every form of nicotine except for cigarettes? I really don’t get it

So in the classic irish government logic I a 30 year old male who has used pouches to successfully stop smoked won’t be able to use pouches because 16 year old who shouldn’t be using them are getting hooked 🙄

If we are going to be a nanny state, can we at least get proper care when we are sick?

Oh, and the Children’s Hospital being finished this decade would be a bonus, please?

Very easy to go on crusades against certain products, how about actually building a functioning health service?

    9. Odd_Feedback_7636 on

My son used them to give up vaping, he used vaping to give up cigarette and he used will power to give up these pouch things. So from my perspective they do have a place in the giving up smoking journey.

Would they ever fuck off and let the people have some nicotine

    11. It’s my fault, customs opened my delivery package from sweden yesterday. Can’t have anything nice, if they take my wine delivery from me I’m gone

    12. chuckleberryfinnable on

Is invidious the right word there? Wouldn’t insidious be a better choice?

    13. PaddyMakNestor on

For fucks sake, the stupidity in this would be unbelievable if it was not the Irish government doing it.

It is getting to the point where the reasons they give are so stupid that you have to start to believe in a hidden agenda here, especially when they invoke, “won’t somebody think of the children!”

Do they want to drive everyone back on the smokes, is it the loss in tax revenue? Pouches and vapes significantly reduced the pressure on our health system and their damage to society as a whole is in my view negligible compared to the alternative.

Spend your limited time and energy talking real problems instead of solving invented ones and parting yourself on the back Trump style.

Clearly big tobacco lobbying within the Department of Health is working. Nanny state nonsense.
