We will see. In a way it will be a good test of EU negotiation strength and how much of leverage that big common market actually provides.

The largest market in world is so worried about standing up to second largest market in the world

      Isn’t it interesting.

Well, Merz can’t make trade deals so he’ll have to be a patient boy and let the EU do its job.

    5. Rutte calling Trump “Daddy”, Mertz now bowing to him.

What in the fuck is going on here?

German government leaders and the wrong side of history. It´s a thing.

    7. The problem isn’t neccesarily whether it’s good or bad (I’m sure they could outmaneuver Trump) but the volatility of it. Anything they sign doesn’t matter when Trump could just decide to void it in a week and put on more tariffs.

One thing you all have to keep in mind, is that this is Trump we are dealing with. So the narrative of EU should be “This deal sucks for us, it’s not good, we would absolutely lose BIGLY, but since it is you, oh, mighty Trump, we are forced to agree!” especially when the deal is good.

      Let’s wait and see.

A trade deal must be negotiated by the entire commission, not a si glue damn country.

There won’t be a deal and the EU is walking into this blindly.

Trump has already laid out his demands: change VAT, change food safety standards, change rules for digital companies, etc. On all these points the EU has stated they are non-negotiable. Rightfully so.

But I am certain Trump is too stupid and callous to accept ‘no’ for answer so he will try to strong-arm the EU into compliance.

Take a cue from the US-China trade talks. The only reason the US reached a deal quickly was because China holds a near-monopoly on rare earth metals which they leveraged in april. As a result, alarm bells started going off in the US because without these critical minerals production in several sectors – especially the defence sector (notably the F35) – would grind to a halt.

If the EU does not produce similar leverage, Trump will try to hurt us into compliance. Trump is not interested in a ‘mutually beneficial’ deal, he wouldn’t have attempted tariffs in the first place if he was. He wants to impose unilateral force to the benefit of the US. The EU is failing to understand this.

F*** Merz…as a german I do apologise for all the boomers who voted for this dickhead.

I voted against him as many of the hunger generation… But we are not enough.

We should do a deal with China instead. Not cower before Trump, stand up to him.

    13. pam_the_dude on

Does it matter if it’s a good or bad deal? It’s gonna be void again a few weeks later anyway.

    14. TACO will cave as he always does when it gets rough. If the EU doesn’t understand that they have the upper hand and cave, they can’t be helped.

It’s unbelievable that many Europeans still seem to think that they’re up against some mastermind… The US is lead by a bunch of idiots. You can basically get whatever you want if you play smart, just like Rutte yesterday.

Just remember with Trump it’s all ratings and not actual policy:

Just do what UK Starmer did… take a piece of paper, write trade deal on it – have it signed then talk at length to the media how awesome Donalds cock tastes.

    16. at0mheart on

There is no good or bad.

Just sign a deal, any deal. Look at what the UK signed, it was a big nothing and they got tariff breaks for RR and Martin; which they wanted.

So give Trump his deal and add something small you want as well. Deal done.

Then help negotiations with China, which is also causing you actual problems.
