That’s kind of what happens when inflation makes the numbers go up but you keep the tax bracket fixed at the same values…

50k really is not a very high salary, and taking away 40% of everything earned after this point is utter madness.
But ultimately we have a shrinking minority of the population funding a growing majority who do not contribute economically.
As we’ve just seen – the government seems unable to cut any expenditure without people becoming hysterical, so we will just continue in the economic death spiral.

And Starmer will have no “concessions” for the people funding everything…

Ahh fiscal drag.
The absolutely hysterical frothing over changes to winter fuel allowance and PIP payments show that we govern by social media in this country. That needs to end.

£857.8 billion tax revenue last year which is 3.5% higher than the year before.
France took 1,454.55 billion Euros (£1239 billion) with an extremely similar population.
Tax is not nice here and I’m well into the painful tax brackets but it’s not that bad in comparison to similar countries, realistically we need to pay more to bring services and general living standards up.

It’s not going to be long before people are paying 40% on minimum wage. I remember paying 40% ten years ago and I’m pretty sure the threshold has hardly changed.

We need higher tax brackets
I have no idea who decided that somebody earning 60k needs to contribute more (as a %) than somebody earning 30k
But somebody earning £500k doesn’t need to contribute more (as a %) than somebody earning £150k
