It definitely *can* be one. I’ve seen it used against women making perfectly reasonable requests like telling people to keep the noise down when they’re blasting music at 02:00

    2. Time-Ambassador-6280 on

Can’t everyone be a Karen, no matter the age, race etc?

    3. Just_Juggernaut3232 on

Isn’t it applied to someone because of their behaviour, rather than immutable characteristics? I call my friend a karen all the time when he’s being one.

    4. Alternative_Gap8442 on

They’ll just be a name change if that’s the case and Courts won’t be able to keep up.

I personally don’t understand why it exists as a word anymore. Originally it referred to a “can I speak to your manager” type of person, irrespective of gender, yet now everyone uses it as a generalised slur against any woman they disagree with.

Just use the word “bitch”. We all know that’s what you’re doing anyway. At least own your misogyny like a man.

    6. Mkittehcat on

Maybe you shouldn’t call someone you work with Karen. That is rude and inappropriate

    7. Andrew1990M on

It was a real shitty thing to do to actual Karen’s, but you never know when these things are going to catch on. Hope it’s just a generational slang that’s gone in my lifetime.

    8. siwo1986 on

We just go back to calling people who are behaving like Karens what we used to call them, self absorbed entitled brats who never grew up

    9. Longjumping_Stand889 on

Yeah reddit and twitter do take great delight in these kind of stereotypes. I think there’s a belief they are ‘punching up’ but quite often it seems they are just punching.

    10. Exact-Character313 on

That’s the most Karen thing any Karen has ever Karened

    11. Psittacula2 on

By the same logic is “Peter Pan” also ageist, sexist and so on? Just curious how the law figures these things out?

I was a personal assistant to a MD called Karen, who was a woman of a certain age and also a bit of a Karen.

She once asked me when I wasn’t expecting it if she was a Karen. Almost bit through my cheek saying no.

    13. Savings-Toe-2310 on

Last I checked karens came in all shapes and colors. Anyone can be a Karen. There are even male Karens. Race is not a factor. Is it now racist to call someone an AH?

    14. Ill_Professional6747 on

Nonsense! I used to call my middle-aged white boss Karen all the time, and she was totally fine with it.

I guess it helped that her actual name was Karen, but idk

    15. WebDevWarrior on

What if her first name is actually Karen?

Do we call her Voldermort (she who shall not be named) to avoid liability? **/S**

    16. Does that mean people called Karen can now sue their parents? Or people born after the “slur” became popularised only?

Edit: as someone born and raised in Scotland, calling someone a Jessie, meaning wimpy and not masculine, was thrown around on the daily. Not once did we take it as a racist, sexist (was aimed at males) or whatever. We took it on the chin…. and then called that person also a Jessie.

    17. recursant on

Maybe just stop using derogatory terms for your coworkers? If someone is doing something wrong, complain about the thing they are doing wrong rather than using a slur against them.

Slurs against protected characteristics are particularly bad, but slurs against other characteristics are not acceptable either.

Little girls born in the 60s and 70s were probably the first ones to be encouraged to stand up for themselves and to be unafraid to speak out. The problem is that now we’re menopausal and irrationally angry.

    19. shuffleyyy1992 on

Nah being a Karen is an attitude issue, not a race, gender or age issue, my 5 year old son can be the biggest Karen sometimes…

    20. Raging_Crowbag on

If they weren’t being a Karen this wouldn’t be an issue. Are we not seeing the irony here?

    21. Longjumping_Day_2143 on

Knew a Karen who had to change her name in her 40s she was

    22. martzgregpaul on

The people who are most upset at the word Karen are generally people who want to act like Karens but not be pulled up on their behaviour.

Dont want to be called one? Dont act like one.

    23. JenovasChild666 on

Stop the world, I wanna get off.

A “Karen” is describing characteristics, it’s nothing to do with race. Absolutely sick of that R word used out of context in attempt to cancel things/people.

    24. Own-Banana-2338 on

Speech police…. funny thing is, you lot police yourselves.

    25. humakavulaaaa on

Karens come in all form shape age race and genders. So wtf are they talking about

    26. Valuable-Ad-1477 on

If the only reason they’re being called a Karen is because they’re white and middle ages then yeah, it’s definitely a slur
