I don’t see anything inherently wrong with that. What is “Spanish” exactly? There are several population groups there that are very distinct from one another, in ethnicity, culture, language, food, even external appearance. I find it the same in Italy. It always makes me laugh hearing people say they love “Italian cuisine” or “Italian culture”, to which I’d probably answer, “which one?”.

Diversity is one of our greatest qualities and what defines us best. It gives us an extraordinary cultural richness. Traveling through Spain is like traveling through a thousand different places, each with its own language, cuisine, architecture—all of them incredible.
Some people don’t feel Spanish? It doesn’t matter—what matters are our historical ties. The hundreds of years we’ve shared. We are Europe within Europe

I wonder what the question was. Eg. If it was what they identified as FIRST, it might not be Spanish. Like how in some countries different proportions of people identify as European first, or as Scottish first etc. Forcing people to select just one geographic identity can give very misleading results, and we don’t know the question asked here.

Trajan_Voyevoda on
Cleary a deceptive take on the survey. These figures account for the % of people do not identify Spanish whatsoever plus the ones who feel more attached to their region than to the state, which is absolutely normal given the plurinational nature of Spain. Feeling more Basque or Galician than Spanish doesn’t mean you don’t feel Spanish at all.

Depending on how the question was asked I could be included in those percentages.
But more than anything, I’d say that I don’t identify myself with the vast majority of Spanish people. I really don’t.
I can’t say that I don’t identify as Spanish because regardless of how different I think I am from the people of Andalucía, Madrid, Catalonia or Euskadi, the fact is that I’m Spanish.
I just can’t say “I don’t identify as ….” when I know I am. That would be some stupid denial.

I am from Valencia and would consider myself at least as Valencian as Spanish if not a more Valencian but it is a bit unfair as I am biased towards hating centralism and fascists that account of a portion of the right wing that make Spanish people look conservative, backwards, unsophisticated and some of them uneducated and aggressive…

Really depends on how the person took the question.
If it was directly “do you think of yourself as Galician first or Spanish?” Then 99% of Galicia would say Galician, which does not mean they are anti-Spain.

In my opinion we should remove European countries. Under the umbrella of the European Union, there should be just “historical regions”. Lombardía, Catalonia, Ille de France, Bavaria, Holland, etc…
Same for football, no more European countries for the Eurocup (or World Cup?).

This is wrong. This is not people who don’t identify as Spanish, this is people who don’t identify as ONLY SPANISH (and not at all from their region). The same survey asks if they identify as “both Spanish and from their region” and “Only from [region]”. In all regions of Spain most people identify both as Spanish and from their region. If you ask any person from any region or city in the world if they feel they are from there they will say the do.

Galicians are culturally closer to Portuguese than to Castilians. It’s something that unfortunately will probably be lost in a few generations, but it’s still the reality outside of the big cities in Galicia and Northern and Central Portugal, people speak pretty much the same language and the traditions and way of life are the same, I mean, the Kingdom of Galicia and the Kingdom of Portugal literally exist because of a family disagreement, between Alphonso Henryquez and his mom Theresa, and before that, disagreements between Theresa and her sister Urraca. The Portuguese are literally the descendants of Galicians that headed south to take back the land from the Arab rulers.

As a Galician, This is 100% bullshit and if “true” is just some twisted question and interpretation as “Do you feel more Galician or Spanish?” and the assuming everyone that answers Galician means they don´t feel spanish.

The question is probably whether people feel only Spanish or more Spanish than their region. I’m Galician, and by no means do more than 60% dont feel Spanish at all, nor has this ever been reflected in regional or national elections

Gallego here, this is news to me. If they ask us we’ll say we’re Gallegos, but if they ask us “are you Spanish too?” we’ll say of course. So I wonder how this poll was made
I just checked the CIS and INE and turns out the percentage of Gallegos who identify as never Spanish is 4%… And both Gallego and Español is 65%-70% so my distrust in that map has grown immensely
