Well he’s been part of a government that has been repeatedly warned- for years- for needlessly adding pressure to the economy by repeatedly breaking a rule of limiting spending growth to 5%.

The fiscal advisory council has been on about this over and over again

If shit really did hit the fan and we lost a lot of the multinationals based here and many high earners emigrated, what would we actually have to show for the period of prosperity?

We had cheapish (although bad quality) public transport in Dublin and we got a new children’s hospital (which we were totally ripped off for), a printer and a bike shed /s

Do we have much to show for our recent prosperity other than that the country just kept ticking along?

Part of me wonders if Martin already knows that when the Trump tariffs hit this month that the EU is not going to bat for Ireland to prevent tariffs on pharma production here which employs tens of thousands and is in Trumps crosshairs. Instead the bigger countries will move to shield their own important industries like car manufacturing from US tariffs while Irish pharma is thrown to Trump as a bone to chew on.

Yeh if you stopped wasting tax payers money it wouldn’t be so sobering.

That’s exactly what you want to hear months before the next budget

“I’m sorry, the poor and recently poor (middle class) are going to have to bear the costs so that the wealthy keep getting wealthier.” ~ Michael Martin

Repeat for every future budget meeting of FFG’s existence, no matter the economic circumstances good or bad.

    7. Yet more vague handwaving about “public expenditure rising too fast” and yet fuck all is ever done about it. Meanwhile the supposedly right-wing government won’t even raise income tax bands by the rate of inflation.

There is a huge opening for a genuine centre-right party in this country.

It’s only just gone July and they’re preparing us for a slaughter in the budget.

What a surprise considering there’s no vote coming up 🙄🙄🙄

Congrats to everyone who voted them back in, well done to you all 👏👏

It will be so much worse than we are expecting.

They are already warning us several months out.

We get angry now so we aren’t as angry when it is a shit show in October.

      The bust is coming

The implication being, of course, that they were all drunk before this.

As a nation, we’ve all been living well beyond our means, in fairness.

We’ve been living far beyond our means and it’ll be time to tighten our belts again.
