This mutual defence clause seems entirely redundant given that, even without the US, Article 5 of the NATO treaty can still be put into effect. Article 5 acts very similar to a “Coalition of the Willing” type of mutual defence except it involves 32 countries instead of just 2.
Oh, if only we could show these headlines to people in the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. I’d love to see their faces.
