I don’t know about this. Cocaine users are big drinkers.

Slow clap for our great leaders. This is the result of minimum unit pricing

    3. Most people I know who have cut back on drinking, myself included, did so because it’s too expensive. If you’ve been priced out of a pint, I doubt coke is in your budget.

      Shocked I tell ya!

All the back patting that the younger generation are avoiding alcohol, while turning a blind eye to rampant drug use.

“Since 2017 there has been a 250% increase in cases receiving treatment for cocaine as their main problem drug. There has been a 300% increase in people returning for cocaine treatment as their main problem drug from 692 cases in 2017, to 2,764 cases in 2024. The number of females seeking treatment for cocaine has risen 426%, an increase from 284 cases in 2017 to 1,494 cases in 2024. “

If you can’t afford a drink, chances are you’re not splashing out on cocaine either.

It’s no mystery why fewer people are going out drinking—pint prices in some places have nearly doubled over the past five years, and with tourism down, the impact is obvious. Publicans can complain about rising costs all they like, but they’re the ones who’ve priced their own customers out.

A cost increase of just 5 or 6 cents somehow turns into a 40 to 50 cent hike for the customer. That’s not justifiable. Blaming big drinks manufacturers and assuming customers won’t notice is insulting. But the numbers don’t lie—people are clearly pushing back by simply staying away. Not much Sympathy for them.

That has to be one of the most absolutely moronic statements ever by our Taoiseach who is known for his intelligence…

There could be a link between Manchester United’s position in the league last season and the price of strawberries.

Such a connection ‘would be very worrying’ but there needs to be ‘more scientific analysis’ of the issue.

    8. “Cocaine should be made double super illegal, all Garda resources should be redirected towards enforcement, and all fines collected from those convicted should be put into a fund to be distributed among the owners of licensed premises…” – *the VFI, probably.*

In other news has anyone told the Taoiseach that water is wet?

As alcohol prices and all of the costs that are associated with them shoot up recreational drugs that were previously considered to be too expensive now seem affordable and in many cases cheaper in comparison.

But it’s a matter of personal choice, government policy can influence situations but ultimately decisions on drug use or whatever and down to the individual. People can’t pass off their own responsibility.

    10. Is this also Micheál essentially admitting the government have failed on stopping drugs entering our country? Basically, the use of cocaine is so widespread now that it has affected pretty much the no.1 pass time that this country is known for?

He says there needs to be more scientific analysis.

Which means he’ll ask Alcohol Action Ireland and he’ll get the answer that he wants.

    12. cedardesk on

This should be interesting. Now that the Vintners’ assoc are annoyed, he might have to do something.

In the end a person has only so much bandwidth for recreational use of narcotics or alcohol. If you find your appetite sated by pills, weed or blow then you’re less likely to want to booze. In fact I think there’s study evidence to back this up.

There may also be a cultural/societal aspect of children deciding to be less like their parents who spent or still spend too much time in the pub.

Young people don’t drink as much now as they did in the past with the high price and how cheap u can get drugs for now

Last week he was saying they wouldn’t bring Irish nightclubs onto the same level playing field as the rest of Europe because mumble mumble people have changed or something.

This was his response to Barry Heneghan’s questions on the licensing debacle.

“People are doing different things and are behaving differently. That said, I will come back to the Deputy with where that legislation is at.

Regarding the issue Deputy Heneghan raised, I think the Minister, Deputy O’Callaghan, is progressing that. I will check with him. There has been a seesaw approach to late night openings. Licensing laws are notoriously difficult. We need to consider all the patterns of behaviour that have changed.”

I’m sure his version of the “behaving differently” on that occasion was people getting all gym bunny and going for sea swims.

This “behaving differently” this week is people going all Scarface on the bag.

It is with out a doubt in all the research, that if you deprive people of social spaces like clubs – they simply go back to gaffs and indulge in far more dangerous and “unlicensed” recreational drug use.

It is the anthesis of harm reduction. Anyone who has ever been on the sesh will tell you that.

We could do with being ruled by less moralising school teachers who can’t rub too fucking thoughts together in their head.

Firstly I think people need to realise that the biggest gateway drug to cocaine use is actually alcohol and I don’t for one moment think there is any meaningful drop off in alcohol consumption but there is a drop off in purchases of legal alcohol in the republic

Since minimum pricing came in to the republic the amount of alcohol being smuggled from the north and Eastern Europe has increased dramatically and this needs to be accounted for

There could be a link between going to bed and falling asleep? 😂

Make all pints €5 again make zero alcohol products cheaper and make uber and lyft available for people in rural areas

    19. well… I’ve seen a lad do a big durty line and then just sit at the bar chatting with friends with no drink in front of him….

      So, yeah. I guess.

    20. davesr25 on

Ah shur many of his peers are on it, maybe he can ask them.

    21. INXS2021 on

That a pints are heading for 9 euro a pop. Cheaper to be on the smack

    22. Fender335 on

Just shows he knows absolutely nothing about cocaine use. Alcohol and coke go together like a horse and carriage.
