The Spanish Meteorological Agency said June was the hottest on record, with average national temperatures reaching 23.6°C. Parts of the country recorded daily highs exceeding 40°C.

Catalonia was among the worst-hit regions. Authorities ordered 14,000 people to stay indoors as two fires ignited simultaneously in the Lleida province. The fires destroyed farmland across a 40-kilometre area before being contained. Officials cited the combination of heat, dry conditions and strong winds as critical factors in fuelling the blazes.

In France, two people died from heat-related illnesses, and over 300 others required hospital treatment. Environment Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher confirmed that this June was France’s second-hottest on record. Temperatures exceeded the seasonal average by 3.3°C.

It’s terrible that we have these heatwaves and terrible that people are still dying.

I am old enough to remember the early 2000s ones. It’s a shame we don’t give names to heatwaves like we do hurricanes because they all devastate people as well as forests and other areas that burn or suffer severe drought.

In 2003, over 70,000 people died in Europe. The hottest summer since the 16th century or so they said. I feel like a lunatic for bringing this up with people, many of whom never registered it:

Others since have also been deadly, but not on that scale

The fact that people aren’t dying in droves is good, overall, but still not great that there’s loss of life when we all could do better to protect the vulnerable. Even the ones who don’t “believe”

The heatwaves are terrible, but I feel that these headlines could be problematic. If you say 8 people died of course it’s terrible, because it’s 8 people that would be alive if the weather was normal, but also it feels like 8 is not much, so you can have people arguing that we are all exaggerating. I really don’t know how all this should be handled.

There is no real heatwave. Europe is inherently a cool climate. This FUD and nonsense is just a form of guile by those in power.
