Successive government failures. They simply do not give a shit, which is unsurprising when you see how many of them are landlords.
I don’t know why they don’t just check whatever other countries are doing and try to replicate it here. If we’re so behind in the management of housing for the people that means other countries must be doing something different and that’s working.
What really goes underreported is just how pure shite the vast majority of rental accommodation is compared to virtually 90% of other European countries. It’s a x4 rise with generally much worse offerings where the bare minimum in other countries is treated like a luxury.
This is an important statistic to keep in mind for those who insist that every country has a housing crisis.

In fairness in 2010 they had probably been falling at four time the EU average too.
Not downplaying the situation but 2010 was the absolute depths of the financial crash where we were bankrupt and run by the IMF, so not really a good baseline for us at all
