Well that is a german policy failure
Going straight to the US then, maybe european MIC will be better in 20 years with 0 investment from Europe…..
Funny how Airbus begged Germany to buy their thing but they don’t care anyway, they should just take their loss and work closer with a certain european country that does not have such an extreme mindset.
TLDR (made with Gemini)
Germany’s top military procurement official, Annette Lehnigk-Emden of the Bundeswehr’s BAAINBw agency, stated that future defense contracts will prioritize rapid delivery of equipment, regardless of the manufacturer’s country of origin. This strategic shift is crucial as Germany prepares for a significant increase in military spending.
Here are some key points:
* **Speed Over Origin:** The primary criterion for arms purchases will be who can quickly provide the required material, emphasizing an “off the shelf” procurement approach to save time. German arms makers are hoping to benefit from the spending surge but companies in the United States, which have expansive military production capacity, also expect to boost profits.
* **Increased Defense Spending:** Germany plans to nearly double its military spending. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has supported raising NATO’s defense spending target to 5% of national GDP (3.5% for core defense and 1.5% for broader security issues like infrastructure and cyber security), a significant increase from last year’s 2.1% (approximately 90 billion euros). This is enabled by a historic loosening of Berlin’s constitutional debt brake.
* **Urgent Equipping by 2029:** Lehnigk-Emden stressed the urgency to equip forces by 2029, which is the date NATO warns Russia might be capable of a large-scale attack against allied territory.
* **Industry Expansion Needed:** While German arms makers hope to benefit, Lehnigk-Emden urged companies to boost production capacity to meet the surge in demand.
* **Procurement Priorities:** Air defense and ammunition are identified as top priorities for military procurement, aligning with NATO’s targets for weapons and equipment.
* **New Legislation to Accelerate Procurement:** New legislation is planned by the end of the year to speed up procurement processes, addressing past accusations of sluggishness by the BAAINBw. This law will aim to minimize delays from legal challenges and may grant power to restrict some tenders to European bidders or subcontractors, with Germany already increasing its use of a national security clause under EU law for domestic procurement.
* **No Risk of Misallocation:** Concerns about potential unnecessary or misallocated spending under pressure to meet targets were dismissed, as procurement will be aligned with military demands and parliamentary approval.

Then you’ll get what you don’t want, but quickly. This is short term vision, they don’t see the bigger picture.
How can you publicly signal ” we are desperate and clueless” any more efficiently??
If Germany is really going to throw 40 billion euro at new armoured vehicles then I can say Australia will be quite happy to help supply more Boxers through our facility.
I think in that circumstance it isn’t too controversial. They are German designed vehicles, made in a Rhienmetall facility. Just in Australia, and we are building about 120 Boxer’s for the Bundeswehr already.

Wie Gut die sind !!!
Congratulations Germany, a step towards an independent Europe on the leash of the bloody Americans, who surely won’t blackmail you worse than a mafioso like they are doing with Ukraine.
your “quick supply” is just yet another excuse for our governments to maintain European dependence on the United States.
Thanks to all European politicians for proving that they belong to the invertebrate class and that they don’t give a damn about the future of European citizens in a strong and independent Europe.
Thank you for your talk and bullshit
Edit P.S.: We should not support any 5% or 3.5% of military spending in US weapons and vote and support accordingly and against any politicians that propose that. I pay taxes to defend my country and Europe not to appease King Trump D’Orange.
We refer to that as a Blitzpurchase.
Redditors would rather die for their personal ideology than to see germany defended.
If there’s one thing Germany is known for is the incredible incompetency of their procurement with multi year overruns for trivial things like getting new helmets, or repairing a sailing training ship for the navy.
Speed is absolutely something Germany needs to solve for.
Is this the German efficiency that they’re renowned for?
Our country just does not want to learn
When was the last time Germany made a truly wise decision? They replaced nuclear energy with coal, supported a genocide once again, and now – apparently – are looking into funding the American military-industrial complex instead of backing European defense companies.
How on earth can you ensure your citizens’ safety by choosing companies from a country that has proven itself untrustworthy – especially when that country is cozy with the very person who invaded Ukraine?
That is a nice way of saying they would not buy European in order not to promote industrials rivals.
Anyway, without industrial investment the capacity of European industries to quickly deliver won’t change. And those investment are far too high just to be paid by companies, unless it is a juggernaut like RM.
Just like the Eurodrone, why use a European motorization solution while they could buy one from good old uncle Joe…
Just like the F35, good luck waging war with the good willingness of the US who control all the collaborative combat cloud facilities and data’s.
Or just like the MAWS joint program, can’t dominate it ? Let’s just buy US made equipment instead.
People says French industrials are greedy on the SCAF but considering all the shit Germany pull off joint collaboration programs, the best athletes principle seems common sense. Just as the prevalence of domestic sovereign solutions over foreign dependence. And who did they invite aboard this flagship sovereign program ? IBM…
I swear they will do everything to buy from the US instead of non German European solution. God forbid they ever buy French.
As long as they purchase in Europe, it doesn’t really matter.
Remember people, the ENTIRE European defense industry must thrive for our collective good. We must not have only one or two countries do well, there needs to be competition between multiple EU countries as that will stimulate innovation.
Competition is always good.
This was expected and has been her and Pistorius position for months now. Wherever possible systems will be bought from German suppliers (Tanks, IFVs, Armored Support Vehicles, Trucks, Ships, Uboats, Short and Mid range AA) or license made or co produced in Germany (Patriot by MBDA Germany, Israeli Arrow-3, APS, PULS and Spike missiles). If that’s not possible due to speed it will be bought from whoever can deliver. Like with the Patria APC.
Sadly most EU alternatives can’t deliver in time. In total not even 1000 Aster missiles have been produced for SAMP/T where as Germany plans to build 1000 Patriot missiles per year. For Arrow-3 there’s no alternative at all available.
Also they want to go to off the shelf products instead of reinventing the wheel everytime (see paratrooper helmet debacle).
Not surprising when you look at the people inside the ruling party. They come from BlackRock and have ties to the Heritage Foundation. They’re run by the same people that put Trump into power, and as such they are doing the same shit. You might hear some rhetoric against the US, but that’s also something you hear from Erdogan. He’ll fall in line anyway
Someone is getting their pockets lined by American MIC
which means, more money to the US…
>”The industry must expand its capacity. We will procure, that’s for sure – and off the shelf… as time is of the essence,” she said. It was urgent to equip forces by 2029, she added, the date when NATO warns Russia might be capable of a large-scale attack against allied territory.
massive and shows that the German commitment is to defending Europe __first__ and to funneling money to German industry only second.
Lmao, nice spin on continuing to support US’s control over us.
