I genuinely don’t understand Sinn Féin strategy here. They’ve cancelled their Ard Fhéis but are going to hold a conference on a very minor issue?

No matter what decision they make, they’ll piss off a lot of people on the left or right (or both) so they have nothing to gain. Normally parties want to downplay controversial issues but holding a conference will only draw attention to the fact that there’s internal disagreement.

It is kind of crazy looking back how FG managed to bring in changes like the gender recognition act, with little or no controversy, from within or outside the party.

It’s ironic that Sinn Féin of all parties on the Island of Ireland is the party that seems to be so highly at risk of importing British transphobic/TERF nonsense into Ireland.

Like Michaél Martin is more sound on trans rights than many SF representatives.

A lot of trans people in Ireland feel extremely left behind by the government with the absolute state of our healthcare and other system and when you have shitbags in SF praising Britain’s Terf legislation it’s pretty understandable why they’re not seen as trustworthy on Issues regarding trans and queer people as a whole.

I really don’t expect much from SF in general but not being seen supporting anti trans legislation and maybe supporting extremely basic measures like a switch to an informed consent model for our healthcare system seem like easy wins.
