During Russia’s invasion, Ukrainians are fighting to protect not just their homes — but the nature around them.

One of the places endangered by war is Askania-Nova, the world’s oldest steppe biosphere reserve. Located in southern Ukraine, its unique flora and hundreds of rare animal species became targets of Russian looting and destruction after the area was occupied early in the full-scale war.

In this video, we share archive footage and the words of Viktor Havrylenko, Askania’s former director, who spent 30 years protecting its treasures — until the occupation forced him to leave both his job and home.
