U.K. major projects in a nut shell. We just can’t get this right as a country. Major construction is really tough to design and scope, lots of variables are always changing, especially when design isn’t completed before starting site works. We’d do better as a country to spend more time upfront designing such projects before a spade goes in the ground.
However, optimism bias creeps in and folks involved often don’t feel things will take as long or cost as much. I think we’ve seen enough to change our approach to such endeavours and give a different methodology a punt.

Hand it to a Japanese company and the whole thing would probably be done in no time. Every part of the original route would in place and finished.
Since the HS2 announcement in January 2009, Japan has built approximately around 467 miles of additional high‑speed rail in their country. In contrast the route between London and Birmingham is only 140 miles of track. Japan has the same issues we do, protected wildlife, buildings, country parks etc. They just get on with building modern things a good pace to a very high standard and then maintaining and running them very very efficiently.
Im just sick and tired of it. The North needs better connection. The South and South west needs better connections. Wales needs better connection. Just. Blooming. Build. The. Thing. My. God.

China can build an entire city in ten years, meanwhile the UK can’t build a single rail line in almost 20. At this rate, HS2 will be completed around the same time China finishes the trans-Pacific mega highway

picture this…. i want to build a road, from anglesy to london….
i now have to do an environmental impact report for each inch of that road, then implement extra environmental ( flooding due to tarmac, changes in sound levels, damage to near by habitats etc) and wildlife safety procedures (bat bridges, underground tunnels for badgers and hedgehogs)
all of that at the cost to the tax payer in the millions
then after doing that, construction… which is always behind, always costs more then expected, its always late (because its government work and they milk it every single time)
at the end of it you have a road that only half finished, billions over budget and some how, cant be completed with out a governmental oversite and and approvel on every metric, every inch, every steel rod, every rebar, every white line, every crash bar….. billions in waste
this is why the UK is still reliant on things built in the 60’s that are barely hanging on, continuously patched and fingers crossed it never brakes

That’s because elderly nimbys and hippies demanded it be mostly put underground, making it unaffordable.

China built an entire high speed rail network spanning their whole massive country in the span of 12 years btw

Absolutely disgusting. To think this country is cutting benefits for disabled people when we sink literal trillions into poorly managed construction projects.
It’s a total scam, in a just world this kind of blasé disappearing of funds would result in criminal convictions and a total overhaul of our planning process as a top priority of our leaders. The fact it isn’t means we know where that money is actually going.

The constant delays and cost overruns on HS2 are beyond frustrating when you see countries like Japan efficiently building entire networks in the same timeframe. We desperately need better infrastructure across the UK, but our approach of rushing into construction without proper planning just sets us up for failure. At this point, maybe we should outsource the project management to a team that actually knows how to deliver.

Most likely so they can drag out costs and pocket them

Part of is is gross mismanagement at the top, the other half is gross misallocation of funds by unscrupulous middle men who skim off the top. Happens in every single construction job in the country. Until we can no longer tolerate a criminal building infrastructure in this country, it will continue like this.

Hell, they would have completed HS3 up to Glasgow if that hadn’t arsed around so much. Spain has built most of a national high speed rail network in a shorter time
