What’s worse is that anyone would consider buying British steak in M&S, or buying any food in there ahead of an Irish producer.
      M&S were fans of Brexit.

    2. Legitimate-Garlic942 on

Go to M&S for loaf of bread… End up spending €100 for 1 meal.
Just go to lidl or Aldi mate, no difference in the animal

    3. Bernieward28 on

Go to a butchers and buy a tomahawk or a cowboy. Leave bone on it

    4. bob_jsus on

M&S is your problem. Zionist Brexiteers. You’re also probably paying for the import. Brits at it again.

    5. Old-Handle-2911 on

I mean, yes it’s expensive but it’s a fillet steak from Marks and Spencer’s fancy range… Pretty much the definition of non-essential purchase. Prices of basics like eggs, bread, milk, butter, non-luxury meat and poultry etc from large supermarkets are the much bigger issue

    6. Imagine going to an M&S food store and expecting things to be cheap. Their whole shtick is charging premium prices to people willing to pay them. Yeah, you’ll get better value – and probably better quality – going to a decent butcher, but what you’re looking at is a premium price for a convenience product in a prestige retailer. Its like the perfect storm of being overcharged.

To me, no. To you, no. To somebody, yes. They clearly have a market it for it.

I have been known to try bits of steak you’d get for 5/6euro in dunnes, for €15 plus. Do I notice the difference, no. Will somebody, yes.

      We aren’t the target market.

Dry aged is always going to be more expensive but I don’t know who in Ireland is buying British steaks

    9. Antique-Bid-5588 on

I dunno but it is a dry aged fillet from m&s so it’s as premium as you are going to get . Dry aging Is expensive because it takes time and space and creates loss of weight.

It’s still way, way, way too high for me to want to entertain out of principle, but fillet steak is €50/kg in SuperValu, €45/kg in Tesco, €40/kg in Dunnes, and €36/kg in Aldi. At least I’m looking at a photo of the shelf and not a receipt in the OP, though!!

Also since the price is up so much for meat, an amazing trick to tenderise meat I stumbled across is called ‘**velvetting**’ which is done a lot with Chinese food.

      * Get about 125ml water (or better yet, half white wine and half soy sauce) and about 1tbsp of cornstarch or baking soda. Mix them together thoroughly in a bowl to dissolve the cornstarch. Make sure the cornstarch is dissolved and not just caked against the bottom of the bowl (which it’s a fiend for doing, far more than flour).
      * Add the meat, properly coat it all over and then sit it there to marinade for 30 mins up to a few hours.
      * Remove it from the mix (optional if you want to wash off the marinade or not) and cook as normal.

It makes no sense to me how it works but it does! Just watch whatever type of meat it is become far, far, far more tender so you can buy ‘rougher’ and cheaper cuts and dress them up as a fancier one with basically no cost or effort. Works best for smaller cuts for stir fries etc, but it also does for full steaks if you just give the mix a little longer to soak through.

There are more complex ways using baking soda and whole mixes of sauces and extras that I like to do, but most Irish houses won’t have sesame oil, MSG, mirin, etc etc in the press, so the above works perfectly fine for anyone wanting to give a quick experiment with it.

Here’s a very very quick video on it by a lad called Andy Hearne (“Andy Cooks”) who’s also just an awesome youtuber for anyone looking to improve their cooking skills – [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lHMh3hOxl98](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lHMh3hOxl98)

Is this rage bait? You are in a high end shop buying imported (shite) beef. I mean what the fuck did you expect?

    12. Reasonable-Food4834 on

Best solution is to shop around. Incredible value out there.

    13. Margrave75 on

      Know why it’s that price?

Because there’s people out there willing to pay it.

I was in tbe garage this morning, guy was in asking about tyres for his car, quoted 360 each for 4 tyres, guy takes out his card to pay and asked can they be done now. Didn’t even question the price.

Some people out there for whom money isn’t a problem.

    14. Ireland2385 on

      1. It’s marks and Spensers
      2. It isn’t from the butchers
      3. It’s not an Irish steak

Almost seems like you went out to find something to moan about

    15. Against_All_Advice on

For British meat? I wouldn’t eat it if it was free. They didn’t manage CJD or Foot and Mouth properly at all. Their regulations and enforcement are cat.

    16. TheYoungWan on

All the best cattle farms on your doorstep and you go off and buy BRITISH beef?

      Seriously?

    17. DuctTapeAndCableTies on

      >€125 per kg

It gets worse when you think about the fact that the farmer only gets between €7-8/kg.

Also, it’s hilarious how people seem to think there’s some significant difference between how beef is reared in Ireland vs. The UK.

    18. Lopsided-Code9707 on

Burn everything British except their coal. The Premium Butcher online will deliver 1.4 KGS of Irish fillet steak to your door for €55. They’re part of Dawn meats. Search “premium butcher.”

It’s ridiculous the price of caviar these days. My children will have to go hungry again this week

    20. Too-many-Bees on

M&S is gone mad. The last time we went in, we walked around for less than 5 minutes looking at prices before deciding to just go across the road to Dunnes.

    21. CheweyLouie on

To be fair, that does look like a nice piece of fillet steak with the marbling.

    22. MiggeldyMackDaddy on

Why are you buying British beef in Ireland. Get down to your local butcher immediately

    23. shankillfalls on

Why would anyone buy food in M&S?

    24. Blod_Cass_Dalcassian on

Just put it in your bag and fck off with it. No one’s going to do anything.

    25. TheOriginalMattMan on

Go to M&S after lunch, you’ll find a see of yellow reduced to clear stickers.

      Or just don’t buy it.

    26. Full_Mushroom_6903 on

Absolutely crazy stuff. Beef, especially premium stuff is going to get worse though.

    27. ehtReacher on

This pricing looks like a sure fire way to increase food waste and as a result increase cost further

    28. As if it isnt expensive enough already. Butcher prices are already around 55-65 per Kg, compared to 35-40 5 years ago

    29. iamthesunset on

M&S, ‘nough said. You know more reputable retailers sell Irish equivalents at lower prices and it didn’t have to be imported from a non-EU country. I am starting to believe this is rage bait and you sir are sitting back with a bag of popcorn waiting for the comments to roll in

    30. Serious-Landscape-74 on

You can get 2 from your butchers for less than that. Or Aldi, do a pack of 2 for €17 and they’re decent.

    31. And the bullshit 10 days salt aged!!!

Aldi do sirloins for a fiver each, and if you look through the packets, you’ll often find fillets.

For a fiver, and it’s traceable, and Irish

Edit to add, that steak does look delicious!!

    32. I live in Scotland and M&S here do wagyu steaks for not much more than that.
