can somebody translate that headline to thick? the only thing i’ve managed to figure out after a couple minutes of scratching my head and trying to read the article is that it’s probably not about a plane pilot confirming that small boats have returned
Surely ‘one in, one out’ means the net balance doesn’t change. Dump them within swimming distance off the coast of Africa in a dinghy with a pack of biscuits. Done.
Unrelated to the UK, what are France doing about the people in the camps? Like why allow them to setup camp at the shore if France don’t want them either

This has really highlighted how illiterate your average Reform voter is. Lots of people clearly don’t understand what a pilot is.
I’m seeing is a lot of confusion around this policy.
Essentially it’s not actually about deporting people, its about the game theory of paying to come over on a small boat. If you know if you cross over you will just be returned to France, that immediately makes the whole effort pointless.
The UK is happy to tie the deportation to 1 person imported because its proportional to those coming over on boats. As the people crossing over decreases (as they will just now be returned to France), the number of people the UK imports from this policy also decreases. If they can get this to work it has the potential of instantly fixing the small boat crisis.
This is ridiculous!
20,000 in , 20,000 back to France, then like for like 1 in 1 out means we still get 20,000 of em !

As an FYI, Greece and Turkey have had a similar deal in place for quite a while.
I did see a statistic floating around that illegal crossings did fall by around 90% initially as there was now a deterant.
Looking at the issues with it, it seems that some greek courts argued that Turkey was not a safe place, which is obviously not an argument for returning migrants to france.
There was also the fact that Turkey agreed in part due to the EU providing funding to help Turkey deal with the influx of illegal migrants. Turkey has since argued about the funds received.
Given the deal is between France and the UK, most of these arguments won’t apply. We have already paid france a princely sum to stop illegal boat crossings, and the deal reached prior to this strengthened that and has (at least, initially) seen to be working.
The ultimate goal is that France wants to remove the migrant camps from its northern coast. If Migrants now understand that they will be sent back to France if they have no ties to the UK then that already removes the incentive to pay thousands of euros to attempt the crossing in the first place.
Although this is only a pilot, if the UK and France see a marked success, then that is a result for all.
The trick now is for the UK and France to unleash some media coverage of this deal, and ensure that migrants understand that there is a very real chance they will end up back on the same side of the channel.
As an aside, with Syria now stabilised (somewhat) in the middle east I do believe we will see a very real drop in boat crossings and migrants. This also coupled with the germany-afghan deportations means that the more incentives that are withdrawn, the less appeal there is overall.

I’m glad that Starmer is making progress towards a return scheme, but “exchanging” 50 migrants a week isn’t going to make a difference.
It definitely won’t slow down support for Reform either, which is the real issue we’re facing imo.
I don’t understand the benefit here? We can send back the boat arrivals to France, but we have to accept someone else for each person we send back. So, who are the people we get? More people waiting to get on a boat here in France?
Now, strike an actual deal that solves the issue and returns the illegals to their home countries.
I don’t understand why the French put them in tents and we out them in hotels , why do we have a different approach to the French. Why doesnt France stop them entering their country to start with ?
