Would hate to be the person that fell for this, must feel absolutely terrible…you’d think with such a large amount of money there’d be so many system checks that it’d be impossible for this to happen though!! Awful.

      What does the NTMA do?

The NTMA is a State body which operates with a commercial remit to provide asset and liability management services to Government. It has evolved from a single function agency managing the National Debt to a manager of a complex portfolio of public assets and liabilities.

      🙄

Edit it’s amazing how people can’t see a sarcastic comment in an apposite quote.

Meath County Council fell for a large fraud like this before- €4.3 million  in 2016. Got the money back though. No thanks to the lack of basic controls they should have had with large payments such as this.

as did Wetmeath County Council- [https://www.westmeathindependent.ie/2025/05/30/case-closed-on-e515k-westmeath-county-council-fraud-as-funds-cant-be-traced/](https://www.westmeathindependent.ie/2025/05/30/case-closed-on-e515k-westmeath-county-council-fraud-as-funds-cant-be-traced/)

There’s nothing particularly sophisticated about these scams either. Lack of basic controls and double checks.

If the person who fell victim was trained to avoid scams then it is their fault.

If the person who fell victim to the scam wasn’t trained by the NTMA it is the NTMA’s fault

    8. Only thing they can do now is hire an external consultant and change their name to avoid them being associated with the headlines
