“Apartments” the size of 2 and a half parking spaces….the pretence of the government looking to solve housing as opposed to increasing landlord/developer profits is out the fucking window now. Happy Sunday

The people justifying the changes last week on this sub was embarrassing. Hint of classism about it.

Tell you what. If I could find a 50 square meter 1 bed apartment I would be buying it now. Because what is going to happen is that the country will be full of 1 bed apartments at the same price in a few years but they will be half the size. Making time 50 sqm one worth way more.

When people think of eugenics, there is the forced sterilisation that governments commited such as Denmark on native Greenlanders and Ireland/UK by locking up people in asylums. There is also the softer form, which is to make financially or physically challenging to bring up children, but still provide just enough for working.

I’ll never understand the idea that if you cant afford rent or a mortgage why you would contemplate having a child.
the apartment in the article is not 32sq meters either, its probably closer to 20sq metres.

Hegarty’s argument is a little maximalist here I think. She appears to be arguing against studios (and maybe one beds?) altogether.
I’m in the funny position of agreeing in theory with lowering standards. I live in a 75sqm 3 bed (sharing), and have previously lived in a 25sqm studio both of which were fine for my needs at the time and I do not believe they should be illegal to build. At the same time, I also believe this is a really bad idea right now and the way the government is going about it is really poor. I agree with Hegarty’s point on that, that it will stick a whole load of apartments back into planning issues.

why would you want to have a child? That child will have even worse life than you already have. Why bring more souls to experience misery? If you cant afford whatever the fuck you want forget about children.

And you couldn’t have four or five children in a two bed apartment with the current dimensions. What’s the point here?
All of these things are relative, and there is a demand for smaller spaces like these.

They don’t want you to have kids in those spaces though…ever.

Kf you chatgpt or grok it Irelands regulation os some of the highest in europe.
If you dont own a house you are renting with 2/3 people. My sal has been 100k for five years and I would have struggled to have my own gaff before I bought. Not every appartment needs to be for a family. Sometimes the ideal is the enemy of the good

Not liking the doom-and-gloom, anti-natalist, “why would you bring a kid into this world” type of comments on this post.
Ireland needs to boost fertility or else we will become an island of geriatrics.

They won’t be apartments. They are 32 square meter work Barack’s. Nobody will buy them – all will be housing stock and of course there very existence means livable apartments will no longer be created. Seriously, think about it for a second. It’s a horrible idea, and I think they know it. FFG are selling people out.

Went to visit a friend in Tokyo last year, and you couldn’t swing a cat in his apartment, but he gets on with life over there as he is working 12-16 hour days he doesn’t see much of his cell anyway. This October, I’m off to see a friend in Hong Kong, which, by all accounts, is going to be even worse. She can touch both walls with her hands stretched out, so it should be interesting! Im staying in a 5-star hotel, so it might be a case of her crashing with me in luxury for two weeks before she goes back to her prison cell. ( l booked a room with Hong Kong harbour view so it should be spectacular) The point being ……we have got to stop bitching about apartment sizes here, they are grand compared to Hong Kong and Hong Kong sized apartments are the future for a lot of people,we should embrace the smaller size apartments and see it as a necessary price to pay for living in one of the best cities on the Planet. In fairness, l own my five bedroom house in Clontarf, so apartment sizes don’t bother me, but people need to accept change and they need to embrace smaller living spaces, not everyone can have it all. I bought a gorgeous Clontarf house in 2013 for a song, not possible now. Another thing to look at is one man plastic “space capsule” pods, very popular in HK and are a plastic cubicle you can install in a room with a bit more space than a coffin to live in,small built in tv and PC for entertainment and you can pull down a shutter to lock yourself in. These are the future. LOOK UP “SPACE CAPSULE PODS HONG KONG”. They look amazing 👏

Do you know what they could do instead of making apartments smaller?
BUILD UPWARDS. I saw a new apartment block going up close to city centre that was 4 floors.
Jesus christ, if this is their answer, this crisis will never be solved.
And they simply don’t care. They won’t get voted out.
It’s not them living in it.

Orla Hegarty is not a “leading housing expert”, she’s a Twitter psycho who was one of the worst exponents of forever lockdowns. By far one of the most hysterical and dismissable voices of that era. She was a “keep schools closed indefinitely until they have lab grade HVAC systems installed” freak.
We NEED small living spaces for single people for many many reasons. Before they banned the bedsits, everyone under 25 who wanted to move out, could. Now we have family homes being used as houseshares for single people.
But Hegarty is a “let perfect be the enemy of good” nutcase. Pay no heed at all to what this fruitloop thinks, or listen, then do the opposite. She showed us who she is during covid.

I find it strange that amongst Irish people that all housing units must be capable to house a family…
When I lived in an apartment I would have preferred smaller and single bed units but those were like hens teeth…
There are numerous different needs for people and those change with different stages of live…
I’m trying to help my family find a single story 2 bed and it’s impossible
