War gives rise to the worst crimes — and the most powerful acts of humanity that try to undo them. Some stories are lucky enough to capture both.

Yevhen Lyr ([eugene_lir](https://www.instagram.com/eugene_lir/?hl=en)) is a Ukrainian writer, translator, volunteer, and soldier. His story is closely tied to the 2023 Russian sabotage of the Kakhovka Dam in southern Ukraine — one of the most devastating war crimes Moscow committed during the full-scale invasion.

Lyr witnessed the aftermath of the flood firsthand: first as a volunteer helping civilians, then as a serviceman stationed in Kherson for a year. That dual perspective shaped “The Flood” — an English-language novel that blends real stories, fiction, and the often-overlooked spirit of Ukraine’s south, in what he calls a book of love.
