Of course the Drinks industry Group of Ireland would fund a report with a doom and gloom headline that suggests to the gov should cut excuse duty that will just end up with them making more profits. Customers sure wouldn’t see any benefits to a cut in duty

A lot of places had too many to be sustainable. My home town used to have over a dozen, in a town with 0 restaurants or cafes, and one shop. The numbers dwindled to 5 now.

You mean people won’t pay 7 plus euro for a pint of beer? Who would have known.

When you think about it the pub industry is receding down to two main things which are actually a net positive.

People’s social behaviour around drink culture is shifting. We’re opting to spend our time doing healthier activities instead of drinking pints.

Cracking down on drink driving means people are less inclined to risk driving to the pub for a couple of pints.

I’m drinking a fraction of what I was in 2005.

Sure, it’s expensive, but it’s also just depressing.

My medium sized town had about 3k people in the mid 90s and 20 pubs. That was a pub for every 150 people in the town, including children, sustaining a publican and staff all on their own.

Today, it’s got 10k people and 10 pubs remaining.

We’ve lost some good ones, but mostly the worst of them have closed and two of what’s left have expanded massively into huge pubs.

Twenty years ago I was working as a bar man and used to see the same lads who were 20 years older, every weekend they’d be in and drinking 15 drinks a piece. Chinese in the way home. The Celtic Tiger expanded the waist line at some pace.

Now I’m as old as they were and I’m not exactly in great shape, but Christ I would be a mess if I was doing what they were doing 20 years ago. I’m almost glad it’s gotten so expensive and made me get more creative about how I spend and enjoy my weekends.

      Presumably, most of them rural?

Living here in a city centre, and pubs are hopping at the weekends, and busy most weeknights too. It helps that most have live music. Trad in particular is wildly popular.

Far too many pubs and not nearly enough vegan trans only spaces. #FreePalestine

I just don’t understand the mentality of pubs. Ohh the local pub has closed . It’s a business like any other . If you don’t do anything to attract people. You won’t make money. Some local pubs are like. We sell alcohol so take your beer sit in the corner and drink up. Pubs haven’t changed for years. People are tired of ye olde wooden bar look. And judgemental publicans.

At one stage, in the town I grew up, (pop 12000) in the early 90s, there were 23 places you could get served a pint. 2 were clubs but the rest were pubs. That is not sustainable. There are less than 10 now and some of them are struggling badly. The times they are a changin.

Rural and small town Ireland was ridiculously overpubbed. 30 years ago a drive around the back roads of a given area would see you pass any number of crossroad/junction licensed premises.

I love pubs and do stil go to them, however I don’t understand why their closures should get so much more attention than business closures in other sectors. Of course there are instances where the state should subsidise sectors that may otherwise be financially unviable – like public transport and childcare – and publicans seem to believe that they should be in the same bucket, but I don’t think this washes with most people

Id imagine its at the point now that if you dont own the premises its just not doable anymore

I would’ve guessed it was closer to 50%. It’s certainly over 50% in my home town.
