To be fair I don’t know anyone with a Sony smartphone.

      >A story from Finnish outlet Suomimobiili reports that Sony is pulling its smartphones from the local market and turning its focus to online channels.

      >Sony’s latest phones, including the Xperia 1 VII, are currently unavailable on Sony Finland’s website and those of its partners, and are expected to remain unavailable.

      >Sony confirmed that the Xperia 1 VII won’t be sold in Finland and that the company is focusing on “online shopping channels to provide customers with a smoother shopping experience”. Sony says its flagship is available from its own online store and via Amazon in selected European countries.

      >It’s a similar story in other European markets. Sony’s online store doesn’t list the Xperia 1 VII in most European countries – Germany and the United Kingdom are notable exceptions.

      >It appears Sony is indeed downscaling its smartphone business in the European market. Combined with the recent issues Sony’s been having with its Xperia 1 VII in its home market of Japan, it doesn’t bode well for the future of Xperia phones.

      >Here is Sony’s full response to SuonmiMobiili: “The Xperia 1 VII is not available for purchase directly through Sony in Finland. However, we are constantly assessing market profitability and customer demand. We are currently focusing on online shopping channels to provide our customers with a smoother purchasing process. Currently, the Xperia 1 VII can be purchased directly from Sony’s official online store and through Amazon in selected European markets. Sony remains committed to fulfilling all maintenance and upgrade obligations for existing customers as usual,”

It wouldn’t be surprising if Sony exit the smartphone game like LG did a couple of years ago. I was looking at Xperia 1 VII and felt it was overpriced…

My first smartphone was a Sony Xperia.. V?

I liked it, then they started doing these weird 21:9 aspect ratio phones 🙁

I see here people asking “sony, what?” But is it really good to have only Samsung, Apple and Google (Pixel) phones available? More competition is always better.

A shame in a way. They’re good phones and all, but they tend to look a bit dated, not really designed with ergonomics in mind most of the time. They do have good cameras, but Sony hasn’t really invested anywhere near enough energy to beat the long-standing (and blatantly wrong) consensus that more megapixels == better photos. Whilst Samsung, Huawei and co are in a pissing-contest for who can cram more megapixels into a subpar sensor the size of a baby’s fingernail, Sony has focused on the details that really matter like optics and sensor size, but 99% of consumers don’t know what actually matters. That’s why it was so easy to convince half of them that they need deca-core processors and 12GB of RAM for games of Wordle on the toilet and off-kilter mirror selfies.

It’s a shame that verifiably well engineered products are losing out to flashy gaudy nonsense untethered to functional reality, but it’s not that surprising. Zunes were always superior to iPods and look how that went.

Honestly sad. Sony made some of the most underrated Android phones — clean UI, great cameras, and a headphone jack. But terrible marketing kills again

I’ve got one now, my second Xperia. I like the weird AR, it fits my hands nicely. 🫤 But then I still miss Blackberry.
      Boo.

    8. Pity. I had Xperia 5 few years ago, and before that Xperia XZ3. Fantastic phones, but now I’m in team Samsung.

It kinda worries me. At the moment its basically Apple, Samsung and all the rest are chinese phone manufacturers. I find it to be quite dangerous for our safety.

I keep my fingers crossed for HMD and Nothing. Unfortunately, so far HMD produces only medicore devices with high price tag. Nothing phones are good, but it’s still a niche – it’s worth to give them a try, at least it’s european manufacturer.

Maybe time to switch to a smartphone made in the EU?!? Maybe even free of Google? Or Ubuntu Touch?

“Volla Systeme is an independent, German manufacturer of smartphones, optionally with its own Android operating system Volla OS or the mobile Linux distribution Ubuntu Touch. Volla OS is characterized by uncompromising data protection and a uniquely intelligent operating concept.”

In Europe, you can walk into 10 stores and not see a single Sony phone. Not surprised they’re downsizing — they’ve already been ghosts for years

It really didn’t help that Sony has a terrible update policy, compared to Google, Samsung and Apple. Especially for the premium price.

The news headline should be: Sony reportedly still has a smartphone business in Europe. Who knew.. I honestly thought they stopped long ago.

    13. dustofdeath on

      They barely have any business.

A very narrow segment of filming focused clients.

Feel like this was already the case for a while. I like their midrange phones but when scrolling a webshop some months ago all that was left were the 1000+ euros flagship models. Shame, they made phones more than good enough yet affordable.

    15. I was not aware they were still around in the smartphone business!
