“We get these too in Australia. The [consensus](http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1469494) [in the](http://www.thecatsite.com/t/247089/weird-goodbye-phone-calls-anyone) %5BInternet%5D(https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130528180135AA5Jlk7) seems to be that these are automated calls from [cold call](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_calling) telemarketers. These automated callers calls random numbers and wait for the call to be received. When you pick up the phone, what’s supposed to happen is that your call will then be routed to the next available telemarketer agent within a few seconds. In this case however, what happens is that at the time you picked up, there is no agents available, so the auto-caller waits a few more seconds for the agent to pick up, and finally gives up and plays the “Goodbye” message and disconnects.”
